With skyrocketing prices on Burgundy wines, it is hard to find just the right ones with the right complexity and mineral expression at a great price one would hope for. This week we have a longtime favorite from this heralded wine region, but from an uncommon varietal: Aligoté. This grape accounts for less than 1% of the total production of white Burgundy, with the vast majority going to Chardonnay. Usually Aligoté is inexpensive, tart, light-bodied, neutral in expression, and falls short of the greatness of Chardonnay. But my, this wine captures the beauty of what this grape can achieve. Winemaker Grégory Patriat firmly believes in using Aligoté from 50+ year old vines with the same care as fine Chardonnay. The wine was aged for a period 16 months in French oak (30% new). Breathtakingly fresh, fruity, and mineral, this Aligoté displays extraordinary depth of flavor, textural finesse, and has a long, mouthwatering finish. This wine will make you salivate and keep you coming back for more! I would not pass up on this offer as the wine frequently sells out within a few weeks of the release.
