CHATEAU PICHON LONGUEVILLE BARON 1994. MARCH 21, 2002.

Posted by Admin on Mar 21, 2002 - 12:00 AM
This is the kind of wine I dream of finding for you.

I was in Bordeaux in June. It was a dream trip. All First Growth Wines - Lafite, Haut Brion, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Petrus, D'Yquem - you get the picture. And dinner at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild.

I would have made the trip just for that.

When I returned to my hotel room that night, a bottle of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1993 was waiting there for me. What a gesture. I'm still stunned.

But 1993? I couldn't wait to drink that bottle. Find out what it was like. After all, '93 was not a stellar vintage. But Lafite makes fine wines in even less than perfect vintages. The wine was silky. It was graceful. It had fine, sweet fruit. It was ready to drink. It was everything a lovely, matured Bordeaux should be AND it was a Lafite. My mind was churning . . . If I can buy this wine at a reasonable price, it would make a great story for an email.

DOMINIQUE LAURENT '99 BURGUNDIES. MARCH 21, 2002.

Posted by Admin on Mar 21, 2002 - 12:00 AM
I have just received an offer of approximately 95 six packs of what's left of Dominique Laurent's 1999 Red Burgundies. Laurent is a Burgundy negociant who buys wine from superb vineyard sites. He then finishes the vinification, racking, barrel ageing, and bottling himself. His wines are among the finest produced in Burgundy. And '99, as you may know, is one of the best Burgundy vintages on record.

I am forwarding this offer to only a select number of email customers who have told me that they are interested in the finest Burgundy wines.

PASSOVER WINES. MARCH 18, 2002.

Yarden. The Hebrew name for the Jordan River. That ancient, historic river which divides the Golan Heights from the Galilee. Names that are in the news today for much different, sadder, more serious reasons.

This is prime grape growing territory in Israel. On a plateau which reaches 3,900 feet, it's relatively cool and the volcanic soil provides excellent drainage. Considered the finest wine appellation in Israel. This is also where, in 1983, the hulks of 250 desserted tanks captured during the 1967 Six Day War, had to be hauled away so vines could be planted.

If it weren't for the fact that the President of Yarden visited me at Pearson's one day last week, I would have missed tasting Yarden's most recent releases. Forget about these wines being Kosher for Passover. They are, of course. But as far as the quality is concerned, being Kosher for Passover is incidental. The wines belong in world-class company. They are undoubtedly the best Passover wines I've ever tasted.

KENDALL-JACKSON'S GREAT ESTATES & CAMELOT WINES. MARCH 14, 2002.

Kendall-Jackson. Go into any restaurant in the country. Kendall-Jackson is most likely THE BEST SELLING wine on the list. Quite a feat. Most of it is their Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay. If you haven't drunk it, seen it, heard about it, or fallen over it displayed in a wine store, emailee's, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ?

Gee, Steve, I'm sorry.

It's OK. The reason I'm writing about Kendall-Jackson today is because Easter's coming in a couple of weeks (EQUAL BILLING NOTICE: I'm doing Passover Wines next week). The whole clan is coming and you want to serve something special AND you want them to know that you're serving something special.

TINTO PESQUERA 1998 HALF PRICE. MARCH 11, 2002.

''Very few people can take credit for revolutionizing a major wine region

Baron Philippe de Rothschild in Bordeaux,
Robert Mondavi in Napa Valley,
Angelo Gaja in Piedmont are among them,
and all have become icons to wine lovers worldwide.
Here's another name to add to the list:

Alejandro Fernandez, maker of PESQUERA in Spain's Ribera del Duera.''

Wine Spectator, November 30, 1998.
