SEGHESIO FAMILY VINEYARDS

The Seghesio Story begins in 1886 when Edoardo Seghesio departed his family's vineyards in Piedmonte, Italy for a new life in America. Like so many immigrants, he was drawn to Northern Sonoma County and the Italian Swiss Colony, to follow his passion for winemaking. The "colony," as it was known, hired immigrants for three year stints, providing room and board and then, a lump sum at the end of those three years enabling employees to buy land or set up a business in their new home.

Soon, Edoardo rose through the ranks to winemaker. Yet, he yearned for home. The Colony's manager repeatedly encouraged him to stay and finally, it was his niece and the opportunity to purchase land that convinced Edoardo to remain. That young girl, Angela Vasconi and Edoardo were married in 1893. In 1895, they purchased a modest home in northern Alexander Valley, less for the home than the surrounding 56 acres Edoardo recognized as ideal vineyard land. They planted the "Home Ranch" that year to what has become the family's lifeline - Zinfandel.

From the time of Angela's death until the mid 1970s, the Seghesio Family flourished in the bulk wine business, producing most of the red wine made in Sonoma County. At their largest, 1,700,000 gallons were produced between the original winery in Chianti and the Healdsburg winery. Yet, as the industry evolved, so did the Seghesio family when in 1983, the first wines were bottled under the Seghesio label at the hands of Ted Seghesio, a fourth generation family winemaker.

Ted was the not only the winemaker but sold and delivered wine. In 1986, his cousin Peter Seghesio joined the business and began to set up a distribution network nationwide. By 1993, the Seghesio brand had grown to 130,000 cases of not only the family's zinfandel and Italian varietals, but also Chardonnay, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc and both red and white table wine. It was in that year that the younger generation was given control of the winery. Fortunately, they too shared a passion for the land and a desire to produce wines they were passionate about. They turned their focus to the vineyards and eliminated all but the wines we grow reducing production to 30,000 cases.

Today, they are proud to passionately produce almost exclusively estate wines, some from those same vineyards Edoardo and Angela first planted in the late 1800s.

SEGHESIO ARNEIS 2009
LIMITED SUPPLY
Winery Notes: “Arneis originates from the hills of Roero, northwest of Alba in the Piedmonte region of Italy from which our grandfather, Edoardo Seghesio, emigrated in 1886. First noted in Italian records as far back as 1478, Arneis’ production grew as it was often planted among rows of Nebbiolo to lure hungry birds away from the more prized red grapes. Arneis’ literal translation is "little rascal," due to the viticultural challenges it presents in the vineyard.

Tannins and flavors developed slowly without the usual heat spikes, but a very warm September punctuated the vintage by bringing the fruit to full ripeness. Complex, lingering flavors of ripe pears, honeydew melons and green apples. Crisp acidity and bright varietal fruit aromas.”
Reg. $24.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $18.74

SEGHESIO PINOT GRIGIO 2009
Winery Notes: “Our family has grown grapes in Sonoma County since 1895 and, in Russian River Valley, since 1961. A decade ago, we began an aggressive move toward producing all estate wines
which included an extensive vineyard-replanting program.

Pinot Grigio is part of that plan to grow intriguing varieties in the best and most appropriate sites. Noted for its unusual grayish/pink clusters and shared lineage with Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio is well suited to the cooler climate of the Russian River Valley. Richness and textural complexity while maintaining pure, bright varietal essences.Aromas and flavors of ripe apples and quince. Lively citrus character followed by lingering notes of apple and tropical fruit. Try this wine with grilled pork chops with lemon zest, rosemary and black pepper.”
Reg. $24.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $18.74

SEGHESIO ZINFANDEL SONOMA 2008
Winery Notes: “Our family roots are firmly planted in Zinfandel, as our
great-grandfather, Edoardo Seghesio, first planted this intriguing varietal on our Alexander Valley Home Ranch in 1895. Today, we share his passion and, reverently, farm over 250 acres of estate Zinfandel in Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. This wine combines sites that have produced Zinfandel for over a century with newer sites that utilize proprietary clones and the most advanced viticultural practices. Climatic-induced spicy undertones mark the 2008 vintage. Vibrant display of acidity enhances the briary raspberry and blackberry varietal expression. Lush, velvety mouth feel interwoven with fine, integrated tannins creates a smooth richness. Full-bodied, juicy mid-palate with Seghesio "balance."

Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 89 points: "The 2008 Zinfandel Sonoma offers up copious amounts of blue, red, and black fruits as well as excellent purity, medium to full body, a supple texture, and enough acidity to provide vibrancy. It is a pure, elegant, substantial Zinfandel to drink over the next 3-4 years."
Reg. $29.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $22.99

SEGHESIO BARBERA 2008
Winery Notes: “Edoardo Seghesio immigrated to America in 1886 from the Piedmont region of Italy, home to Barbera. In 1895, he planted his first vineyards to grapes he had come to enjoy in his new country; yet one vineyard was saved for varietals from his homeland.

Our Barbera clones were found in that century-old vineyard. Subsequent Barbera plantings on the Home Ranch benefit from northern Alexander Valley’s warm, dry days where the grape’s classic acidity creates a wine with vibrant aromas and a velvety texture. Barbera's dark ruby/purple color is followed by loads of briery, berry fruit, earth, herbs, pepper, and spice. Gutsy and zesty, it is a delicious, medium-bodied red with abundant personality. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years."
Reg. $33.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $25.99

SEGHESIO SANGIOVESE 2007
Winery Notes: “Our grandfather first worked with Sangiovese in the late 1800’s
during his tenure as winemaker at Italian Swiss Colony. In 1910, he planted a Chianti field blend surrounding the railroad station in what was then Chianti, California. Those Sangiovese plantings on our Home Ranch are the oldest in America and provided the rich source of four unique clones for our subsequent plantings of the varietal. Although Sangiovese typically grows vigorously, the low yielding, shallow soils of our Home Ranch, combined with our small-berried clones, produce wines of intense varietal character. “Purity of fruit” core of blackberry/black cherry aromas and flavors.  Fragrant anise spice undertones. Scents of violets and just-tilled earth. Sangiovese’s bright acidity adds succulence Dusty oak and fine tannins provide structure for the fruit to excel. Elegant, round and balanced.”
Reg. $36.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $26.99

SEGHESIO HOME RANCH ZINFANDEL 2008
Winery Notes: “In 1893, newlyweds Edoardo and Angela Seghesio purchased their first home in Alexander Valley. As winemaker for the most prominent winery in Sonoma County, Edoardo recognized great vineyard potential surrounding the modest home. In 1895, he planted the "Home Ranch" and began our family's lineage of Sharing Uncommon Ground. Lush boysenberries and blackberries flood the senses – mouthwatering! Briary underbrush spiciness with subtle hints of black pepper. Home Ranch site-specific "graham crust" nuance. Old Vine's prominent acid presence contributes focus Warm climate exposure to the elements provides for well integrated tannin ripeness. Vineyard Designate that consistently produces finely crafted Zinfandel.”
Reg. $46.99 . . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $32.99

DON MANUEL

The talented Don Manuel de Villafane began making wine in Argentina in the year 1611. Don Manuel Villafañe arrived in Argentina from Spain and became a pioneer of winemaking in Argentina to be one of the Spanish first planted vines in these lands. Its aim was to provide wine to the settlers and members of the church in the adventure of New World settlement. In that year he planted his first vineyard to supply wine to Catholic priests and settlers of the time.

The family tradition continued until today at the hands of his heirs (13th generation after Don Manuel). “Bodega Don Manuel Villafañe”. Which honors the legacy received, naming winery as "Don Manuel Villafañe Bodega." Nearly 400 years of winemaking experience invites us to enjoy excellence resulting from the region of Maipu, Mendoza Argentina.

In his honor they have also created the superb line of wines from Legado and Parados representing the finest varietal grapes of Mendoza. The whole Don Manuel line works in the local market and abroad, exporting to seven different countries. In recent years, has achieved several medals of silver, gold and double gold at international competitions.

The Sangiovese adds the lovely red fruit, the Tempranillo adds earthy and rich notes, and the Malbec gives the wine it depth of fruit and body. A very impressive red wine for a nominal price. The red wine is a very versatile because of the blend of red grapes of which it is comprised."

Robert Kacher's Notes: "The blend for this bottling is 40% Grenache and 60% Syrah, both grown at very low yields and hand- harvested. This is a very sexy wine with strong concentration. Bottled unfiltered. A great value!"
Wine Advocate 89 points: "It is somewhat confusing, but under the Mas de Guiot label, their 2007 Vin de Pays, made from 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache, is a winner. There are just under 3,500 cases of this wine, which displays a dense ruby/purple color and beautiful, sweet creme de cassis fruit intermixed with touches of forest floor, acacia flowers, and earth. Aged in tank and old barrels, the wine is dense and richly fruity, with silky tannins. It should be drunk over the next 1-2 years, as the real value of these wines is their exuberance and rich fruit.."

Wine Advocate 89 points: "The 2007 Vin de Pays blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Syrah (by the way, the labels actually say this on the front so it is impossible to confuse them) exhibits even more complex aromatics of tobacco leaf, spice box, black currant, cedar, and earth. In the mouth, the wine has exuberant fruit, a full- bodied mouthfeel, and surprising elegance and purity. This is another impressive wine to drink over the next 2-3 years."

The Vieilles Vignes is a blend of fruit from Gigondas neighboring villages of Vacqueyras (25%), Rasteau (25%), Seguret (25%) and Rouaix (25%). This wine is technically a Cotes du Rhone Villages, as it comes from the best designated villages in the appellation."

LA FONT DU VENT COTES DU RHONE VILLAGE NOTRE PASSION 2007
Robert Kacher's Notes: "An equal blend of Grenache and Syrah, Notre Passion is harvested at 35 hl/ha (the same required for Chateauneuf-du- Pape). A powerful and intense wine offering up thick, lush fruit and Provencal spice notes, Notre Passion is more like baby Chateauneuf-du-Pape than Cotes du Rhone Villages."

DOMAINE FONT DE MICHELLE CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE 2007
Robert Kacher's Notes: "This Chateauneuf-du-Pape shows exotic and floral aromas on the nose, with bright red berry and plum aromas lifted by clove and cinnamon. It is quite ripe, with deep flavors of bitter cherry, intense spices and smoke. The finish is luscious and long, with very gentle tannins. 70% Grenache, 45 to 65 years old, picked late sur maturite super ripe. 15% Syrah, average vine age 30 years old. 15% Mourvedre, average vine age 30+ years old. Half the fruit is de-stemmed. The Grenache is aged in foudres, the Syrah & Mourvedre are made in small casks."
International Wine Cellar (Stephen Tanzer) 90-93 points: "Deep red. Highly expressive aromas of red berries, smoky herbs, Asian spices and minerals. Smooth and silky, with sweet raspberry and kirsch flavors and no obvious tannins. A seductive, juicy wine that finishes with excellent breadth and precision. I suspect this will be alluring on release."

DOMAINE LES CAILLOUX CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE 2007
Robert Kacher's Notes: "Les Cailloux Rouge has become the standard to which others are compared with its high-toned sur maturite (very-ripe) nose of sweet cherry-raspberry jam, hints of stewed fruits and sweet herbs. This wine is deep and chewy with plenty of ripe tannins and layers of seductive fruit. The finish is extremely long and concentrated. The assemblage is always around 65% old-vine Grenache (80-110 years old); 20% Mourvedre and 15% Syrah. Each varietal is vinified separately. The Grenache is vinified using the whole cluster to maximize color and aromatics and aged in foudres or tank while the Mourvedre and Syrah is aged in small oak barrels for 18-24 months."
Wine Advocate 93 points: "Two brilliant successes are Brunels cuvees of 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. The 2007 Les Cailloux Tradition (a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 12% Syrah, and 3% other authorized varieties) comes from 60-year-old vines and is aged completely in tank except for the Mourvedre and Syrah components, which are kept in small barrels. Explosively fruity, this dense plum/purple-colored wine displays grilled meat notes intermixed with Provencal herbs, spice box, black cherry and black currant, in addition to having a lush, opulent texture. The finish goes on and on, and the wine is beautifully pure. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12 or more years."

ROBERT KACHER WINE TASTING MON NIGHT FEBRUARY 8, 5-8 PM

Posted by Admin on Feb 03, 2010 - 08:31 PM
Robert Kacher

As you have probably heard through the grapevine that we will have the man, the legend Robert Kacher in our store Monday Night February 8 from 5-8 pm.

Also starring with Bobby will be Steve Silver, Creator of the VineWorthy Newsletter and Former Proprietor of Pearson's (Mentor of mine also) along with Ronnie Miller of Kacher Selections.

And let's not forget about the wines as we will be tasting some incredible 2007 Rhone Wines. You probably have heard by now from Robert Parker and Wine Spectator how great these wines are and overall they may be some of the best wines ever produced from the region. Add these great wines with Bobby, Steve, and Ronnie and you have one spectacular night.
YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS EVENT!
There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to David@PearsonsWine.com
(If you already RSVP'D to Steve through VineWorthy. You do not have to RSVP again as we already have you marked down for the event.)

DOMAINE DE LA PETITE CASSAGNE ROUGE COSTIERES DE NIMES 2007
Wine Advocate 88 points: "IThe 2007 red, a blend of 47% Grenache and equal parts Carignan and Syrah, all fermented and aged in tank, is a sleeper selection. Deep ruby/purple-tinged with lots of cassis, raspberry, licorice, and forest floor, the wine exhibits excellent ripeness, a delicious, silky mid-palate, and a good finish. This is a very good bargain and worth drinking over the next two years."

MAS DE GUIOT GRENACHE-SYRAH COSTIERES DE NIMES 2007

DOMAINE DE LA BECASSONNE COTES DU RHONE 2008
THIS IS A VERY GOOD WHITE RHONE WINE
Robert Kacher's Notes: "Chateauneuf du Pape legend Andre Brunel fashions this rich, full-bodied Rhone white. This Cotes du Rhone Blanc offers aromas of sweet honeysuckle and flavors of apricots, peaches and minerals. A blend of 55% Roussanne, 30% Grenache Blanc and 15% Clairette, this wine is bottled in early March for freshness and vibrancy. Domaine de la Becassonne is always considered among the region's finest white Cotes du Rhone."

MAS DE GUIOT CABERNET-SYRAH PRESTIGE COSTIERES DE NIMES 2007
Robert Kacher's Notes: "A blend of 60% Cabernet and 40% Syrah, this wine is aged for up to one year in barrel, and then bottled unfiltered. It is dark ruby-violet in color, with juicy, jammy blue/black fruits with raspberry, currants and violets on the nose. Smooth and ripe in the mouth with dark berry, meat and smoke flavors - there are no hard edges in this wine. Always a favorite!"

    ETHEREAL TESSERON COGNAC TASTING

    Tesseron Tasting Trio

It that time of the year again . . .

    Cognac

And we only bring you the best. So we decided to hold a Ethereal Tesseron Cognac Tasting Monday November 2 from 5 -8 pm only at Pearson's.
There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared. If you plan to attend. Please rsvp to david@pearsonswine.com

The name Tesseron belongs to the family which owns Chateau Pontet- Canet of Pauillac and Chateau Lafon-Rochet of St Estephe . . . two of Bordeaux' most highly respected Chateaux.

But their heritage . . . and wealth and influence . . . began in Cognac where Abel Tesseron founded the family's little known . . . yet highly regarded . . . Cognac enterprise over 150 years ago.

Great-great grandaugher, Melanie Tesseron, visited us last year . . . with three of the most sublime examples of Cognac I have ever tasted . . . from 1929, 1953 and 1976.

No, these Cognacs are not actually Cognacs from the vintage . . . they're even better . . . they are a blend of Cognacs even older than the dates infer. There are four of them . . . Lot No 29, Lot No 53, Lot No 76 and Lot No 90 . . . which translates to mean that they are made from a blend of Cognacs from 1929 and older; 1953 and older; 1976 and older; and 1990 and older.

    Enjoy

AUTHENTIC WINES OF SPAIN TASTING TONIGHT MONDAY APRIL 27 5-8 PM

Rioja Vineyards The importer is a guy I know well . . . I've bought French and Argentine wines from him for years . . . we've travelled together . . . his palate is complete.

This was his first professional venture in Spain . . . a trip he has been looking forward to for a long time. Both his parents are from Spain and both have been in the food business. You remember the Argentine tasting when we served empenadas? Those were Dan's father's . . . and, he says, "My mom makes a mean paella."

He has returned triumphant . . . and in full enthusiasm. His goal was to find authentic Spanish wines. He spurned any wines that smacked of that un-identifiable international style of new oak and high alcohol . . . the wines he sought out go with the local food and reflect the regional culture.

Join us for a tasting of these seven personal, hand picked, authentic Spanish wines.

You can buy the wines individually or I recommend a twelve bottle sampler . . .
    2 of #1, 2 of #2, 2 of #3, 2 of #4, 2 of #5, 1 #6 and 1 #7 . . . $144 (save $10)

    1. VIZCONDE DE BARRANTES ALBARINO RIOS BAIXAS 2007
Steve's notes: "One of Dan's first stops was in Galicia, at a family run winery in Rias Baixas, one mile from his mother's birthplace. This is a completely dry Albarino, all proprietary fruit grown from 30 plus year old vines. Melon and honeysuckle nose, fine, bracing acidity and no residual sugar. When in Spain drink with mussels. In DC, with Maryland crabs."
    Reg 18.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $14.24

    2. REMONTE, NAVARRA GARNACHA 2007
Steve's notes: "This is Basque country, as close as you can get to Rioja . . . some parts of the vineyard are just a few feet from the Rioja borderline. This wine is what we mean by authentic: no oakiness; no vanilla; no manipulation. Medium ruby color. Grape/spearmint nose. Ripe but not overripe. Good, delicious, sweet Grenache from 25-30 year old vines. Really opens up with time in the glass."

    4. AICARA TEMPRANILLO ROBLE RIBERA DEL DUERO 2006
Steve's notes: "Roble means oak. A combination of six months in French and American oak. A real pretty, sweet, medium ripe, medium ruby colored wine . . . silky sweet cherry fruits with a touch of caramel on the nose. The tannins are smooth and the finish shows a lingering minerality."
    Reg 18.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $14.24

    5. VALDEJIMENA RIOJA 2005
Steve's notes: "Spain in a glass. Mintiness on the nose. Aged in French and American oak. The spicy tempranillo marries with the sweetness of the American oak and the elegance of the French barrels. Dan says this the wine to drink with melt-in-your mouth Iberico ham, which comes from wild boar rather than domesticated pigs. "They don't slaughter them," he says. "They feed them til they have a coronary."
    Reg 19.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $14.99

    6. CASTROVIEJO RIOJA CRIANZA 2005

    CLASSIC BORDEAUX
    AT ABOUT $20 AND LESS

As every wine aficionado is now aware, 2005 Bordeaux has been designated the "Vintage of the Century" . . . "Best Vintage in History" . . . "Due to become legendary."

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate: "The perfect vintage for the world's greatest wines of longevity and elegance."

Wine Spectator: "This vintage is destined for greatness. A classic. . . . The success of the vintage is compounded in that its quality extends to so many wines."

How does this happen, you ask?

It's the weather . . . a perfect growing season that began with April's first flowering right on schedule . . . a long, temperate summer with just the right amount of rain . . . an uneventful harvest . . . no flood, no frost, no hail.

That means that nearly 100% of the grapes were ripened to near-perfect levels . . . then harvested in perfect condition . . . no disease and no damage . . . just move them to the fermentation tanks and let them do their thing . . . no manipulation necessary . . . a vintage of extraordinary quality . . . and plenty.

Oldtimers and youngsters all agree . . . if you couldn't make superior wine in 2005 you wouldn't hold a job long in Bordeaux.

What they ended up with are some of the greatest First Growths ever . . . Lafite, Mouton, Latour, Haut Brion, Margaux . . . bid up to $1,000 and more a bottle by international collectors.

AND TO OUR EVEN GREATER FORTUNE . . . some of the most delicious, basic Bordeaux, Bordeaux Superior and Petite Chateaux wines the common man has ever had the pleasure to drink . . . at the most affordable prices.

BAROLO, BARBARESCO, BARBERA WINE TASTING: MONDAY NIGHT SEPTEMBER 15

Posted by Admin on Sep 08, 2008 - 12:51 PM
Prunotto Barolo More than 100 years . . . the Prunotto winery is one of Piedmont's most renowned wine producers . . . specializing in Piedmont's most famous indigenous grape varieties . . . Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo.

Alfredo Prunotto took over the Langhe area wine cooperative (called Vini della Langhe) in 1923 . . . adding his name to the venture, imposing strict standards on production and exporting his Piedmont wines to foreign countries. Over time, ownership changed to the Colla and Filliberti families and eventually the world renowned Antinori family.

Prunotto is located in the Piedmont of northwest Italy (Piemonte in Italian, "the foot of the mountain") . . . the home of Italy's most prestigious red wine, Barolo . . . not to be confused with our local Piedmont plateau here on the east coast of the U.S.

Until Alfredo took over the co-op, most Piedmont wines were underachieving blends made to satisfy the locals. Prunotto was the first winery in the region to individually select grapes from the finest vineyards and to designate the vineyard on the label.

Prunotto's wines are hearty . . . best complimented by Piedmont's rich cuisine . . . traditionally featuring butter and cream rather than olive oil.

PRUNOTTO WINE TASTING MONDAY NIGHT SEPTEMBER 15

. . . including Prunotto's Barbera d'Asti, Dolcetto d'Alba, Mompertone Monferrato Rosso, Barbaresco Bric Turot, and Prunotto's sensational 2001 Barolo Bussia . . . a Wine Advocate 94 point wine and awardee of Italy's highest compliment, the Tre Becchieri (Three Glasses) award . . . prices range from $14.00 to $75.00 a bottle.

Served with appropriate Piedmont foods that will certainly energize the experience.

MONDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 15, BETWEEN 5 and 8 PM

This Barbera d'Asti is made from 100% Barbera grapes from selected vineyards in the area of Asti, in Piedmont. Vivid ruby red in color, Fiulot offers supple aromas of plum and cherry on the nose. Warm and well balanced in the mouth, Fiulot is round and generous, with rich spicy flavors of coffee and dried figs. The clean tannins and crisp acidity frame this wine's velvety fruit and straightforward texture. In Piedmontese dialect, "fiulot" means young man. Prunotto has chosen this clever name for the most youthful wine in their portfolio. A great value wine, Fiulot is recommended with roasted or grilled red and white meat, pasta, risottos, and lamb chops.

    PRUNOTTO DOLCETTO D'ALBA 2006 Reg 21.99 . . . 16.49

Intense ruby red color with violet hues. Mompertone offers rich aromas of ripe plum and cherry, backed by spicy notes of roasted coffee beans, chocolate and pepper. The palate is full and well balanced with a persistent finish of mature fruits.

    PRUNOTTO BAROLO 2004 Reg 69.99 . . . 52.49

NEYERS VINEYARDS TINY PRODUCTION GEMS: WINE TASTING MONDAY JUNE 23

Posted by Admin on Jun 18, 2008 - 12:46 PM
Neyers Chardonnay I can't say enough about these guys.

The multi-tasking Bruce Neyers . . . long time national sales manager for Kermit Lynch Selections . . . previously responsible for Joseph Phelps national sales. He's not just a marketeer . . . he and his wife are grape growers and winemakers at their Conn (Napa) Valley Ranch they purchased in 1984. His extensive experience with French importer Lynch's winemakers exposed him to the sustainable and organic methods used throughout France by their most illustrious winemakers. With every vintage, Neyers moved closer to sustainable farming, until 1998 when he made the decision to embrace organic farming entirely.

Bruce's partner, friend, consulting winemaker Ehren Jordan . . . Jordan calls it one of those "thousand insignificant choices we make everyday" when he applied for work as a stock boy at D.C.'s Bell's Liquor on M Street during his student days at George Washington University. After graduation his new interest in wines took him to the Joseph Phelps Winery and a stint as a temporary tour guide in training under (you guessed it) Bruce Neyers. Then two years in France and eventually back to California where his new-learned techniques helped him land a job with Helen Turley and eventually General Manager, Winemaker and Viticulturist at Turley Wine Cellars . . . where he is to this day along with his own Napa winery named Failla as well as partner and consulting winemaker to Neyers.

Neyers' extensive California portfolio is consistently at the top of Robert Parker's preferences. Parker describes the effort: "Neyers also has an impressive portfolio of wines, some of which come from his own estate vineyards tucked away in the Conn Valley. His winemaker is none other than Turley Cellars' highly respected Ehren Jordan. I thought this was the strongest line-up of wines Neyers has yet produced, although last year the tastings were nearly as good, so he seems to be on a roll."

    NEXT MONDAY NIGHT . . .

A TASTING OF SIX OF MY FAVORITE BRUCE NEYERS WINES.
Except for the Carneros Chardonnay, each of the wines I've chosen for this tasting are tiny production gems of about a thousand cases or less.

MONDAY NIGHT, JUNE 23, BETWEEN 5 and 8 PM

    PEARSON'S WINE & LIQUOR
    2436 Wisconsin Avenue NW
There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP to steve@PearsonsWine.com

Man oh man . . . can these guys make wine!

    NEYERS CHARDONNAY LOS CARNEROS 2006
    4400 cases produced
Robert Parker 90 points: "The 2006 Chardonnay Carneros has a nice, smoky nose of hazelnuts, honeyed citrus, and a touch of tropical fruits in a medium to full-bodied wine with, again, great fruit purity, richness, and zesty underlying acidity."
Connoisseurs Guide 90 points: "Impressive for its richness derived from a mix of ripe grapes, oak with a slight creme brulee bent and its toasted grains aromas, this full-bodied wine is fairly oily on the palate. Its mid-volume hazelnut and apple flavors hold up well into the wine's long, somewhat fleshy finish" 90 Points
    PEARSON'S PRICE 25.99

NEYERS CHARDONNAY EL NOVILLERO VINEYARD 2006
    548 cases produced
Robert Parker 92 points: "Leesy complexity is noticeable in the 2006 Chardonnay El Novillero Vineyard. This wine exhibits good acidity and much more minerality, with hints of pineapple, buttered citrus, brioche, and waxy notes. The wine is a superb Chardonnay, pure, medium to full-bodied, and I suspect capable of lasting 3-4 years."
Steve Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91 points: "Full gold-tinged yellow. Aromas of yellow fruits, lemon and honeycomb. Lush and honeyed, but with its viscous texture perked up by ripe acidity. The plump finish offers lingering stone fruits and a tactile impression of extract."
    PEARSON'S PRICE 39.99

NEYERS ZINFANDEL HIGH VALLEY VINEYARD 2005
    1036 cases produced
Robert Parker 91 points: "The finest of this trio is the 2005 Zinfandel High Valley, a high elevation (1,600 feet) site in the Chiles Valley. This effort exhibits the tell-tale elegance, high acids, and lower alcohol of the vintage along with abundant quantities of raspberry and black cherry fruit in its more complete, concentrated personality. Displaying both elegance and power, this beauty can be drunk over the next 5-7 years."
    PEARSON'S PRICE 27.99

NEYERS SYRAH OLD LAKEVILLE ROAD 2006
    1190 cases produced
Robert Parker 90 points: "The 2006 Syrah Old Lakeville is deep ruby/purple, offering hints of charcoal, blackberry, raspberry, and cherry notes. It has impressive ripeness and density, richness, and more tannin and structure than the Hudson Vineyard. This particular cuvee will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring and should last for up to a decade." Wine Spectator 93 points: "Ripe and grapey, with rich, elegant spice, pepper and juicy, dusty wild berry flavors that are sleek and focused, ending with a long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2012."
    PEARSON'S PRICE 28.99

    NEYERS MOURVEDRE PATO VINEYARD 2006
    353 cases produced
Robert Parker 90 points: "The 2006 Mourvedre Pato Vineyard is relatively stylish for a wine that can often be rustic and animal. The wine displays civilized blueberry and raspberry fruit with earth and spice. It is well-made, medium to full-bodied, with excellent ripeness and sweet tannin. Drink it over the next 5-6 years."
    PEARSON'S PRICE 29.99

NEYERS CABERNET SAUVIGNON CONN VALLEY 2005
    794 cases produced
Robert Parker rating (88-90): "Cassis, tannin, tar, and oak characteristics as well as structure are found in the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Neyers Ranch. Medium-bodied and elegant with good underlying acidity and purity, it should drink well for 10-12 years."
    PEARSON'S PRICE 44.99

Johnnie Walker Blue . . . the rarest and most distinctive of all Johnnie Walker whiskies. Blended from at least fifteen different single malt and blended scotch whiskies . . . some chosen for the original, vibrant characteristics of the distillery that made them . . . others aged up to 60 years, to show off the mellow oak and vanilla flavors of the casks they have been aged in. Royal Lochnagar is at the heart of Blue . . . a tiny Highland distillery that gives a rich sweetness and hints of freshness in the blend. Other malts included are Cardhu and Benrinnes, Speyside malts which provide spice, rich sherry and oak . . . Caol Isla, an Islay malt, adds deep, pungent spice and smoke to the blend . . . in addition Johnnie Walker holds back rare whiskies distilled years ago in distilleries that are now closed and no longer in production . . . such as the long forgotten exotic flavors and aromas of Millburn and Port Ellen.

JOHNNIE WALKER GOLD & GREEN LABEL ALSO ON SALE

CHATEAU MONTELENA TASTING MAY 19, 5-8 PM

Posted by Admin on May 12, 2008 - 09:48 PM
    Chateau Montelena Cabernet 2004

    A BIT OF WINE HISTORY:
    SIX DOLLAR CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY BEATS
BEST FRENCH WHITES AT PARIS BLIND TASTING

    It was May 24, 1976.

Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay (at $6 retail it was considered pricey at the time) took First Place in THE MOST IMPORTANT WINE TASTING EVER HELD . . . then or since . . . a blind tasting of California's little-knowns vs. France's world-famous Chateaux.

The tasting, since known as the "Judgement of Paris," was the brainchild of Steven Spurrier, proprietor of a small Parisian wine shop. Spurrier's main purpose was to call attention to California, AND, of course, his wine shop. He invited France's most prestigious winemakers and tasters to judge. The event was also attended by a French speaking Time magazine correspondent . . . who caught many of the derogatory comments supposedly aimed at the California wines . . . and whose subsequent full page article, which trumpeted California's superiority, proved to be the impetus for turning Napa Valley into a world-renowned wine mecca.

Click here to read Time magazine's 1976 coverage.

Since that famous tasting, Chateau Montelena has consistently produced some of California's most revered wines.

Wine critic, Robert Parker, describes Montelena's Cabernets this way, "I have most Montelena Cabernets in my cellar (one of my friends has all of them), but at the end of the tasting, just to prove what aging potential these wines have, we did a blind tasting of a wine I rated 93 and guessed to be a very ripe year such as 1984 or 1990. It turned out to be the 1976 Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast, an amazingly rich wine offering loads of cedar, spice box, and mature Cabernet flavors, a wonderful, sweet, fleshy mid-palate, and beautiful ripeness in the finish. This is another example of why Chateau Montelena over the last thirty years has been the most consistently fine producer of top-flight, world-class Napa Cabernet Sauvignon!"

Montelena's Chardonnays have also shown the same consistent persistence . . . compared by Parker to Grand Cru Chablis . . . easily aging for ten years and more.

Next Monday, May 19 . . . almost 32 years to the day of that momentous tasting . . . you will have the opportunity to judge Chateau Montelena's progress for yourself.

There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared.

    All wines available to taste . . . and buy . . . Monday night, 5-8.

CHATEAU MONTELENA NAPA VALLEY CHARDONNAY 2005
Robert Parker rated 91 points: "Montelena's non-malolactic Chardonnay hasn't changed in more than 30 years, and they certainly deserve credit for that. It rarely sees more than 20% new oak, and in certain vintages can age remarkably well. The 2005 exhibits beautiful precision, hints of Granny Smith apples, lemon zest, and a touch of orange rind, with medium body, zesty acidity, but surprising intensity and flavor. I'm sure it will still be humming along 10 or more years from now."
Robert Parker rated 92 points: "One of the few California Chardonnays that behaves like a grand cru Chablis is Chateau Montelena's non-malolactic Chardonnay Napa, which rarely sees more than 10-20% new oak. As usual, the 2005 exhibits a nervous edge as well as loads of lemon butter, green apple, and white currant-like characteristics, laser-like precision, superb acidity, and surprising intensity as well as richness. Readers who prefer less oak in their Chardonnays should give this zesty, light, boldly-flavored example a look."
    Reg 49.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $35.99

CHATEAU MONTELENA NAPA VALLEY ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2004
Robert Parker rating (93-95) points: "The inky purple 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers up abundant quantities of sweet earth/loamy soil notes intermixed with black cherry and blackcurrant fruit as well as a floral characteristic. There is superb fruit concentration in addition to a heady blueberry/blackberry component in this effort. Again, these wines need plenty of time to reveal all their attributes, but at the moment, I would be hard pressed to say it's better than the 2003 or 2002. It should be ready to drink in about five years and last for 25 or more. At the end of my tastings, Bo Barrett opened a 1986 Montelena (rated 94), and it is still incredibly young, rich, vibrant, and full-bodied. It is a terrific expression of Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon made by a master. It appears to have another 20-25 years of aging potential.
    Reg 150.00 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $115.00

CHATEAU MONTELENA NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005
Robert Parker rating 90 points: "The winery continues to turn out a strong Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards in the Calistoga area. This is a big production item (10,000 cases), and tends to be a good value for a high-class Napa Cabernet. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (22,000 cases) is a beauty. Savory black currant fruit notes intermixed with some licorice, underbrush, and spice jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, smoothly textured, beautifully elegant wine meant to be served and drunk in its first 10-12 years of life. This clearly has the fingerprints of Chateau Montelena's Bo Barrett and his father Jim Barrett, but at a much lower price point, and for that reason seems an ideal steakhouse Cabernet that gives both value and pleasure.
    Reg 49.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $39.99

CHATEAU MONTELENA NAPA VALLEY ESTATE ZINFANDEL 2005
Robert Parker rating 87 points: "The 2005 Zinfandel is a success in this very challenging year for this varietal (not enough heat, which Zinfandel must have to ripen fully). The wine has good fruit, a leaner style, and a more elegant personality. Perhaps readers who never liked Zinfandel because of its powerful briery blast of fruit may take a liking to these more down-scaled, lighter 2005s."
    Reg 45.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $27.99

Canadian whisky, you ask? . . . distilled primarily from rye . . . which is why most Canadians are referred to as rye . . . not a heavy whisky that overwhelms . . . to me it's the smoothest, most mellow spirit I have ever sipped.

    PORT TASTING MONDAY NOVEMBER 12

Posted by Admin on Nov 06, 2007 - 11:45 PM
Graham Aged Tawny Ports Port is the wine . . . from Portugal . . . named for Porto, the city, or Oporto which is the English spelling. It is located on the Atlantic at the mouth of the Douro River which extends across Portugal and into Spain. Douro is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world.

17th Century . . . the French and English were at war . . . the English were kept from resupplying their favorite French wines. The British, in their search for a reasonable alcoholic substitute, ended up sailing to Portugal where the red wines they were making were very good.

The English began sending casks of it by ship back to England . . . but due to the long sea voyage and the unsophisticated winemaking of the day, the wines rarely arrived in good condition. One clever merchant . . . Pearson's of London, no doubt . . . decided to add brandy to the casks of wine, which stabilized them to survive the long sea voyage. Not surprisingly, the English preferred the sweeter, high alcohol and Port wine became very popular.

Port's winemaking process has not changed for hundreds of years. Unlike table wine, they add a neutral grape spirit brandy early in the fermentation process. The brandy kills the yeast, stops fermentation, and captures the naturally sweet flavors of the intense, ripe red fruit. The brandy stabilizes the wine and increases the alcohol level to about 20%.

    PEARSON'S MONDAY NIGHT PORT TASTING
    Monday Night, November 12, 2007 . . . between 5 and 8 pm

We will be tasting seven different ports on Monday . . . ranging in price from $30 to $150

    #1 #2 #3 & #4 . . . GRAHAM'S 10 YEAR OLD TAWNY . . . 20 YEAR OLD TAWNY . . . 30 YEAR OLD TAWNY . . . 40 YEAR OLD TAWNY

TAWNY PORT. Tawny refers to the color. As they age and mature in the barrel, Tawnies undergo subtle color changes. The deep Ruby hue gives way to a paler red. Then it becomes amber. Then paler still. Eventually takes on a delicate brown, orange tint. They can become very delicate, elegant and complex over time. They won't have a vintage date. You will find them as 10 Year, 20 Year, 30 Year, and 40 Year Tawny Port. they are ready to drink when bottled and do not need to be decanted.

    #5 . . . SMITH WOODHOUSE 1984 LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT

LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT. These Ports come from ''declared'' vintages, but instead of Bottling them in two years, they are aged in cask for 4-6 years, and then bottled. LBV's become light colored and very elegant over time. Since the wine is matured in barrel, the LBV is ready to drink when bottled and usually won't develop sediment.

    #6 & #7 . . . QUINTA DE RORIZ 2004 VINTAGE PORT . . . GRAHAM'S 2003 VINTAGE PORT

VINTAGE PORT. Only very exceptional vintages are ''declared'' good enough to be called ''vintage'' port. Historically only 3 or 4 vintages out of every 10 become ''declared vintages.'' Vintage port is made up of all the best ''quintas'' (single vineyards). They are aged in oak barrels (pipes) for TWO YEARS AND THEN BOTTLED. The wines can age for decades in the bottle. They will develop a crust (sediment) as they age in the bottle and should be decanted prior to serving.

and two special aged Madeiras . . .

    #8 & #9 . . . BLANDY'S 5 YEAR OLD SERCIAL . . . BLANDY'S 15 YEAR OLD MALMSEY

MADEIRA. An Atlantic island southwest of Portugal and off the coast of Morocco. The wine is made similarly to Port but with a couple of major differences. Unlike Port, Madeira is subjected to high temperatures . . . 100 to 140 degrees . . . in buildings called estufas. The process is meant to duplicate the effect of a long sea voyage. The wine is also exposed to air . . . oxidized . . . which gives it stability. An open bottle of Madeira can survive for a year or more. Properly sealed, Madeira can age a hundred years or more.

HOW TO ORDER: reply to Steve@PearsonsWine.com with your name and phone number. We will call you to complete your order. For same day service call 202 333 6666 before they're sold out.

2005 RED BURGUNDIES OF VINCENT GIRARDIN: TASTING MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5

Posted by Admin on Oct 30, 2007 - 01:20 PM
Vincent Girardin Gevrey Chambertin 2005 RED BURGUNDIES OF VINCENT GIRARDIN: TASTING MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5 FEATURING VINEYARD BRANDS BURGUNDY SPECIALIST DANNY HAAS

    PLEASE RSVP

The weather was nothing but perfect . . . the right amount of rain . . . the perfect amount of sunshine . . . the grapes all grew to their perfect size and weight.

Each time the gowers ventured out into the vineyards there was nothing much to do but watch the grapes grow . . . the nights were cool and days were dry . . . no rot or mildew in the vineyards to contend with . . . a single, meaningless hailstorm in late July . . . at harvest time there was hardly an imperfect grape, so no effort was wasted sorting them . . . the grapes reached a higher level of physiologic ripeness than most living growers can remember . . . even the seeds were ripe, leaving little chance of bitterness with the high levels of extraction . . . fermentation was a breeze . . . once the wines were bottled the growers agreed that these are the best they have ever tasted . . . the phone has been ringing off the hook with orders.

That's '05 Burgundy for you . . . a perfectly formed season whose final product is described by wine critic Jancis Robinson as a "thrilling combination of ripeness and acidity. The fruit tastes as refreshing as a sorbet."

Every professional I've had this conversation with has agreed . . . compared with the torture that mother nature usually puts the vignerons through . . . the '05 vintage was just plain easy . . . and the wines are spectacular.

If the critics can't be critical you know this is one helluva Pinot Noir vintage . . .

    Allen Meadows, Burghound.com . . .
"2005 is quite simply the best top to bottom vintage that I have ever seen, period, full stop . . . Moreover, in terms of regional and villages wines, 2005 is so good that it blows the next closest recent contender, 1999, right out of the water . . . But in terms of the sheer number of great wines, 2005 surpasses all of them in my view. I can also report that many domaines made the best wines that I have ever seen from them... In short, mortgage your house, sell your dog, hock your spouse or do whatever you have to do but don't miss the best wines of the vintage or you will, I believe, live to regret it."

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Review . . .
"I've been sampling these wines in depth every year since the 1987 vintage. Growers who couldn't make excellent wines in 2005 should find another line of work."

    David Schildknecht, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate . . .
"there have never before been so many different outstanding red [2005] Burgundies in the marketplace as exist today."

Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator . . .
"The quality of the 2005 vintage for red Burgundy is stupendous. It is simply the best young vintage I have tasted in my 17 years working in the wine business."

Do not miss this important tasting . . . I implore you.

Danny was born into the wine business . . . having started his career in the cellar of the New York icon wine shop, Sherry-Lehmann . . . his father's uncle was Morris Lehmann, the predecessor of the Sherry-Lehmann partnership. Danny is Senior Vice President and acknowledged Burgundy specialist of Vineyard Brands . . . the company his father started which is responsible for such important wines as Chateau Beaucastel, Vincent Girardin, Etienne Sauzet, Domaine Weinbach, La Vieille Ferme, Marques de Caceres and the family's California winery, Tablas Creek.

Danny uses a twenty point rating system to assess his wines. I have taken the liberty to re-calibrate them into a 100 point system. For example, Danny assessed his first wine at 18.2 out of 20 . . . I multiplied his scores by 5 to come up with the more universally accepted version . . . 91 points.

    1. VINCENT GIRARDIN
EMOTION DE TERROIRS PINOT NOIR...$23.99/btl $279/cs

Danny Haas 91 Points: "Stelvin closure. 75% Marsannay, all hillside vineyards. 10% gevrey, 15% Bourgogne old vines, next to Chambolle and Vosne-romanée. all purchased grapes. Deeper color; more vinous, with more depth and class. on the nose, smoky and rustic. on the palate, some black licorice and silky acidity. easy, lush, minty chocolate; has more tannins but they are ripe. Very easy and grapey, very pure and elegant for a Bourgogne."

    2. VINCENT GIRARDIN
      SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE 1ER CRU GRAVIERES...$36.99/btl $432/cs

Danny Haas 94 Points: "Even deeper in color than the Maladière. a riper and more foxy nose of woods and meaty bacon, too. Toasty, smoky fruit with some oak present but the wine has more power than the Maladière and is juicier, more intense and classier. racier, with juicier acids that are long on the palate. Quite classy, very typical Pinot with a beautifully balance mint chocolate finish."

    3. VINCENT GIRARDIN
      SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE 1ER CRU VERGELESSES...$36.99/btl $432/cs

Danny Haas 95 Points: "500 cases produced. 40-45 year old vines, from 2 producers. a lovely, elegant nose, already featuring chocolate and licorice. Deep color - opaque. Very jammy. on the palate, it's milk chocolate, intense and very elegant. So easy to drink already it's amazing; all in the juicy character. Mint chocolate, a touch of tobacco, and baby tannins that bring the fruit to the front palate. a luscious finish that lasts a long time; a smoky Pinot finish."

    4. VINCENT GIRARDIN
      VOLNAY VILLAGES VIEILLES VIGNES...$41.99/btl $489/cs

Danny Haas 94.5 Points: "35 barrels from 5 suppliers. a very classy nose; black in color. Tobacco on the palate. It's very rich and creamy coffee/mocha and has power and racy acids and a luscious middle. Toasty fruit with tannins on the side, like a barbecue sauce - a sweet and smoky finish."

    5. VINCENT GIRARDIN
      POMMARD VIGNOTS...$44.99/btl $539/cs

Danny Haas 94.5 Points: "Very rustic on the nose, foxy like a Pommard should be, along with bananas and nuts. Very spicy on the palate, with milk chocolate and café au lait. lots of thick texture with no tannins and a little bit of side acids. an opulent, juicy, raisinette finish."

    6. VINCENT GIRARDIN
POMMARD 1ER CRU LES GRANDS EPENOTS VIEILLES VIGNES...$74.99/btl $899/cs

Danny Haas 96.5 Points: "The deepest color so far, so deep you can't see through it. Smoky tobacco, very bacony nose. you can sense the depth of fruit. Very penetrating on the palate; it's massive, with lots of oily, powerful multi layered fruit; smoky and multidimensional. long, long flavors and sweet ripe tannins; candy-like with jammy raisins. So concentrated it's incredible; powerful, like a grand cru."

    7. VINCENT GIRARDIN
      GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN VIEILLES VIGNES...$48.99/btl $579/cs

Danny Haas 91 Points: "Pitch black in color. The typical rustic, coffee tobacco notes, along with a little vanilla bean. Toasty oak, silky fruit on the palate. a little bit metallic with lots of coffee without a lot of sugar, but enough baby acids. Smoke and toast on the finish and a bit of tea leaves."

    8. VINCENT GIRARDIN
      CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY VILLAGES VIEILLES VIGNES...$49.99/btl $599/cs

Danny Haas 92 Points: "Animal nose - very leathery and rustic. a bit of mint chocolate also. The fruit is very Chambolle, lacy and silky with round extracted flavors. Sweet but bittersweet, too. Baby tannins and acids all in balance. a silky finish of tobacco and black licorice."

    9. VINCENT GIRARDIN
      CORTON RENARDES GRAND CRU...$83.99/btl $999/cs

Danny Haas 95 Points: "The color of ink. a ripe, salty iodine nose, with some milk chocolate. on the palate, more richness, easier, more luscious than the Perrières. a bit of cherry pie - sweet, candied sugar-coated tannins but mostly lively acidity. Quite thick and palate-staining super meaty bittersweet chocolate rustic finish."

    10. VINCENT GIRARDIN
      CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU...$150.00/btl $1799/cs

Danny Haas 96.5 Points: "Deep, deep color. a raisined nose.. Fat, luscious, oily fruit. Meaty, all in silky elegance. low in tannin but high in sweet, pungent raisined fruit. Very floral and minty; some side tannins but not dominating. a compact, jammy black cherry finish."

SUPERIOR WINES OF VIN DE PAYS TASTING MONDAY NIGHT OCTOBER 8 . . . PLEASE RSVP

Posted by Admin on Oct 07, 2007 - 09:32 PM
Steve with wine at computer RSVP to Steve

Talk to any old-time wine drinker and he will virtually shiver at the thought of Vin de Pays . . . in days of old these were rough, thin, unsophisticated wines . . . made outside of the strict laws of "appellation controllee" . . . meant only for farmer's lips . . . or an unlucky tourist who may have veered off the righteous path to Bordeaux.

Vin de Pays is changing . . . dramatically . . . let me give you an example.

A grower in the Costieres de Nimes (an appellation outside of Avignon in Southern France) may only use three red grapes (Grenache, Syrah, Carignan) if he wants to use the "Costieres de Nimes" appellation on his label.

But let's say he is growing some Cabernet Sauvignon and has discovered that he can make a superior wine from it . . . or he wants to blend Cabernet with Grenache. Although he is forbidden from doing that under the Costieres de Nimes regulations, he can change the classification to Vin de Pays . . . and make the wines the way he wants to make them.

That's what's going on all over France . . . creative producers are going outside of the "appellation controllee" system to use heretofore unallowed grape varietals . . . to make new, delicious . . . and for the most part CHEAPER . . . and in numerous cases . . . SUPERIOR WINES.

Broken record: my good friend, wine importer Bobby Kacher has been a pioneer of this approach with a number of extremely talented winemakers . . . here is your chance to taste some of the best of Vin de Pays . . . three reds and three whites.

MAS DE GUIOT CABERNET/SYRAH PRESTIGE 2005
    Vin de Pays du Gard

Robert Kacher: "François and Sylvia Cornut are in charge here as proprietors. Located in the Costières de Nîmes appellation, François and Sylvia grow both beautiful grapes, and incredible fruit (apricots & cherries), in the area where the Provence, Rhône and Languedoc regions all meet around the mouth of the Rhône River. All work is done by hand with great care and skill, and their wines reflect the authentic Provençal setting. The Syrah for this bottling is specially selected from the best parcels of the vineyards, and the Cabernet is picked really late - sûr maturité, to ensure good structure and wonderful texture. A blend of 60% Cabernet and 40% Syrah, this wine is aged for up to one year in barrel, and then bottled unfiltered. It is dark ruby-violet in color, with juicy, jammy blue/black fruits with raspberry, currants and violets on the nose. Smooth and ripe in the mouth with dark berry, meat and smoke flavors - there are no hard edges in this wine. Always a favorite!"
    Reg 15.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $11.99

    MAS CARLOT SYRAH-GRENACHE 2005
    Vin de Pays Cotes d'Oc

Robert Kacher: "Constructed around the seventeenth century, this old Provençal Mas was brought back to life by the Blanc family, who purchased the estate in the Sixties. Located on the western edge of the Rhône River, in the village of Bellegarde, southeast of the city of Nîmes, the vineyards are in the heart of the appellation's cailloux-based soil. In the old Provençal dialect, "Mas" means farm, and Nathalie Blanc-Marès is beautifully managing this 75 hectares farm with the aid of her husband Cyril Marès, owner of the neighboring property Mas des Bressades (yes, she married the boy-next-door). They are a great Provençal family - young and energetic with great vision and talent. The vineyards were planted in the 1950's and 1960's to the current varietals. The vines are trained using a system called Cordon de Royat, which helps maintain lower fruit production. Mas Carlot limits yields to around 45hl/ha, which is one-third below what the appellation allows. Nathalie likes to wait during harvest - picking late to obtain the maximum maturity for each grape varietal. This wine is a blend of Grenache and Syrah. It is made entirely in tank and the fruit really demonstrates the full ripeness that late harvesting accords Nathalie. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration."
    Reg 11.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $8.99

    DOMAINE SAINT-EUGENIE 2004 CORBIERES
This wine is Corbieres, not Vin de Pays, but it is so good and so cheap I couldn't leave it out . . . an example of wine from the region which is not vin de pays.
Robert Kacher: "Domaine Sainte Eugénie is positioned within the district of Fontfroide, the sweet spot of Corbières, with an 800 year history of viticulture. The estate is located within the foothills of the Pyrénées along the Mediterranean coast. Clay and chalk soils dominate here. The dry weather, sunny and warm climate combine to create an optimal growing environment. This wine is made entirely from free-run juice. It is a blend of about 60% old vine Carignan (65+ years old) with the rest being a blend of Grenache and Syrah (25-46 year old vines). We place about 40% of the wine in small cask for up to 1year. The result is a marvelously complex and clean wine that rivals anything produced in the appellation. The red fruits burst from the glass with mild hints of toast and spice that continue through the impeccably balanced finish."
    Reg 12.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $9.74

DOMAINE LA HITAIRE LES TOURS 2006
Vin de Pays Cotes de Gascogne

Robert Kacher: "La Hitaire estate was purchased by Yves Grassa over 20 years ago. At this time Yves planted Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon to the existing classic Gascony varietals. Today it is owned and worked by his two sons, Rémy and Armin, who are in their early thirties. The property lies about 10 miles from Domaine de Pouy. The vinification techniques used here were learned at Domaine de Pouy. All the grapes are picked in the early morning and the picking bins are lined with dry ice to keep the fruit cold and protect against oxidation. The fruit is them macerated cold between 6-10 hours to extract flavors from the skins. All of the wines here are made completely in stainless steel tank. These extra details insure the awesome quality that we have all come to expect from the Grassa family. "Les Tours" is a cuvée made from 65% Ugni Blanc, 30% Colombard and 5% Gros Mensang. All of the vines used in this cuvée are 50+ years old. This is a delicious, forward wine with intense orchard fruit scents and flavors."
    Reg 9.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $7.49

    LALANDE CHARDONNAY 2004
Vin de Pays Cotes de Gascogne

Robert Kacher: "It is very possible that Yves Grassa, the proprietor of Domaine Lalande, could be considered one of France's finest white winemakers. Although this estate is located in a region known more for producing fine Armagnac brandies, Yves has been dedicated to growing "alternative" varietals and producing some of the freshest white wines to be found anywhere. Almost twenty years ago Yves planted 60 acres of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in this southwestern appellation. He used great care in selecting very good sites, and then planted the vines densely. Crop-thinning, investments in modern equipment and meticulous winemaking are behind the success of this delicious Chardonnay. All of the fruit for this wine is hand-harvested in the early morning, while the grapes are still cool and firm and then whole-cluster pressed to extract the maximum flavors and aromatics. Lalande Chardonnay is barrel made in 1/3 each new, 1-year, and 2-year oak casks. Harvest normally takes place during the first part of September, with the wines kept on the lees and stirred regularly (batonnage) until being bottled unfiltered around the first of April each year. The Lalande Chardonnay is rich in flavor, but not at all heavy. A great wine and a terrific value."
    Reg 12.99 . . . PEARSON'S PRICE $9.74

    LALANDE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2006
Vin de Pays Cotes de Gascogne

Robert Kacher: "Yves Grassa is renowned for making terrific white wines in France's southwestern region of Gascony. Located about two hours south east of Bordeaux, this area is famous for producing the brandies of Armagnac, but little known for stunningly fresh whites. The Grassa approach has been considered revolutionary in this region. Their family has invested in state-of-the-art technology while maintaining a traditional sense of winemaking over five generations. Lalande's nearly forty acres of Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted in 1984. The vineyards are meticulously maintained, and yields are below 45 hecto/hectare. The fruit is hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed. Grassa uses skin-contact to extract perfume and exuberant flavors of tropical fruit. It is vinified in stainless steel. This wine has attracted an incredible following as it is simply a delicious example of Sauvignon Blanc."

ROBERT KACHER DOMAINE DU TARIQUET--25 YEAR PROJECT YIELDS "OVERNIGHT" SUCCESS

Posted by Admin on Sep 17, 2007 - 03:37 PM
Domaine du Tariquet Sauvignon WINE TASTING MONDAY NIGHT SEPTEMBER 24
    FREE, but please RSVP

As importer Bobby Kacher tells it, this is a project that began more than twenty five years ago . . . about the time of his first visit to Gascony, three hours south of Bordeaux, where they make the French brandy called Armagnac.

Pierre Grassa was a master distiller of Armagnac and Bobby spent the day absorbing some of the finer details of alambic pot stills and wood-fired distillation. But the Grassa relationship was truly kindled when Pierre introduced Bobby to his son Yves, whose special interest was not in brandy . . . but in making his Ugni Blanc and Colombard grapes into the freshest white wines possible.

This was 1980. Many of the white wines of the day were oxidized even before they were put in the bottle. In those days no one spoke in terms of freshness. People thought white wines were supposed to taste that way.

Bobby recalls, "Yves explained that his goal was to produce white wines that would express incredible freshness and maximum aromatics, almost like eating ripe fruit directly plucked from the vine." He was investing in a method called "cold harvesting" . . . using temperature control in the vineyard and transporting the fruit immediately to the cellar . . . completely protecting the fruit from any oxidation.

Bobby's interest paid off . . . Domaine de Pouy . . . perhaps the most successful fresh white wine on the face of the earth that Robert Parker consistently lauds as the world's best white wine value under $10 . . . was the result.

Grassa's Domaine du Tariquet has grown into a many thousand acre operation . . . Yves owns the vineyards . . . everything is mis en bouteille au domaine (domaine bottled) . . . and the secret of Tariquet's fresh flavors is now open for others to duplicate . . . if they have the passion . . . and the money . . . to invest.

Once harvested the grapes are transported from the vineyards in isothermal tanks . . . sustainable agriculture is foremost, organic fertilization, a recycling water plant and the lowest possible use of sulphites (antioxidents such as vitamin C are the preferred method) . . . AND innovation on top of innovation . . . custom wine bottling . . . nothing is bottled until ordered by the customer . . . guaranteeing freshness up until the last possible moment.

For years Bobby has been telling me that Yves Grassa is the world's best white winemaker . . . and finally he has been acknowledged . . . named "Winemaker of the Year" by the International Wine Challenge in London.

The wines of Domaine du Tariquet are among France's best selling whites . . . featured in all the best restaurants of Bordeaux . . . and all this has been done from one of the least signifcant appellations of France . . . Vin de Pays de Gascogne . . . incredible!

    DOMAINE DU TARIQUET CLASSIC
FAMILLE GRASSA, VIN DE PAYS DES COTES DE GASCOGNE

Bobby Kacher: "This immaculately fresh, aromatic white wine has what it should have, as it explodes with exotic tropical fruits and purity. This wine is completely dry, yet has lovely frangrance and elegance. You can serve this wine with smoked fish, chicken, seafood salds, or just as a house aperitif. This wine makes my friends smile. Me too. Wait until you taste the value."

    DOMAINE DU TARIQUET CHENIN-CHARDONNAY
FAMILLE GRASSA, VIN DE PAYS DES COTES DE GASCOGNE

Bobby Kacher: "This wine shows the creativity and genious of Yves Grassa, as he planted both Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay on a few small vineyard blaocks at Tariquet. The majority of this wine in Chenin with its explosion of fresh flavors reminiscent of Anjou Pears and blended with about 25% Chardonnay for roundness. Impeccably balanced."
    PEARSON'S INTRODUCTORY PRICE . . . $7.99

    DOMAINE DU TARIQUET SAUVIGNON
FAMILLE GRASSA, VIN DE PAYS DES COTES DE GASCOGNE

    PEARSON'S INTRODUCTORY PRICE . . . $7.99

    DOMAINE DU TARIQUET CHARDONNAY
FAMILLE GRASSA, VIN DE PAYS DES COTES DE GASCOGNE

Bobby Kacher: "The Grassa family brings you this powerful, yet elegant Chardonnay, partially aged in French oak barrels. Buttery flavors, toasted bread and vanilla dominate the palate. This rich wine that remains fresh pairs beautifully with a roasted chicken."
    PEARSON'S INTRODUCTORY PRICE . . . $9.99

    DOMAINE DU COTE' TARIQUET CHARDONNAY-SAUVIGNON
FAMILLE GRASSA VIN DE PAYS DES COTES DE GASCOGNE

Bobby Kacher: Cote' Tariquet means "beyond Tariquet" and is the rage in Europe's very top restaurants. This is a vineyard planted in Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and is harvested the latest at Tariquet very carefully. The production is too small to satisfy demand and the quality is truly special. The intense freshness and high notes of fruit is pure class and refinement. Yves Grassa has strived to become the best he can be and his Cote' Tariquet articulates this with fine harmony."

We'll start off with Bordeaux' most famous white wine . . . Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc . . . then move into the reds . . . all from the 2003 vintage . . . that very hot growing season that produced some of the ripest, most generous red Bordeaux in memory.

NO CHARGE for this unique event, however we must make preparations . . .
    PLEASE RSVP to steve@pearsonswine.com

    We will be tasting . . .

CHATEAU CARBONNIEUX BLANC PESSAC LEOGNAN 2004
The Wine Bible. "This is one of the great classic white Graves--Carbonnieux, unlike many other Chateaux, has been serious about making fine white wine for decades. Lots of minerally, citrusy pizzazz here; drunk with oysters in wine bars all over Bordeaux."
    PEARSON'S PRICE $29.99 . . . assorted six bottle price $26.99

    CHATEAU TALBOT ST JULIEN 2003
90 points Robert Parker. "A soft, sexy, near-term style of claret with a deep plum/ruby/purple-tinged color, a big, sweet nose of anise, creme de cassis, smoke, Provencal herbs, and some spice box, it is opulent, fleshy, not profoundly concentrated, but rich enough. Everything is nicely balanced with silky tannin and low acidity. Drink it over the next 12-14 years as this is a seductive wine."
    PEARSON'S PRICE $38.99 . . . assorted six bottle price $35.99

CHATEAU CARBONNIEUX ROUGE PESSAC LEOGNAN 2003
89 points Robert Parker. "Carbonnieux's elegant offerings frequently remind me of a high-class Burgundy more than a classic Graves. The 2003 reveals smoky, black cherry, and herb characteristics, a soft, plush texture, projected, open-knit aromatics, sweet tannin, and a long, broad finish. Enjoy it over the next 12-15 years."
    PEARSON'S PRICE $34.99 . . . assorted six bottle price $31.99

CHATEAU LES ORMES DE PEZ ST ESTEPHE 2003
86 points Robert Parker. "Spicy, soft, savory, medium to full-bodied, with a dark ruby/plum color, hints of earth, plum, and black currant fruit are present in this straightforward, easygoing wine that is best drunk over the next 5-7 years."
    PEARSON'S PRICE $34.99 . . . assorted six bottle price $31.99

    CHATEAU DE CLAIRFONT MARGAUX 2003
Alexis Lichine bought the chateau in 1973 . . . Clairfont is now the second wine of Chateau Prieure-Lichine. Primarily Cabernet and Merlot. It has a black-cherry-vanilla nose, a medium bodied and sweet palate. It is typical Margaux . . . soft tannins and velvety texture . . . similar to the more beefy Prieure-Lichine . . . but made to be drunk at an earlier stage of its life. I would drink it now and over the next five years.
    PEARSON'S PRICE $29.99 . . . assorted six bottle price $26.99

    CHATEAU DE SALES POMEROL 2003
Robert Parker, BORDEAUX. "Chateau De Sales is the largest vineyard in Pomerol and boasts the appellation's only grand chateau. The property is located in the northwest corner of Pomerol, with a vineyard planted primarily on sandy soil intermixed with gravel. The owners are the de Lambert family. The wines are increasingly among the most enjoyable of the Pomerols. They are prized for their sheer, supple, glossy, round, generous, ripe fruitiness and lush, silk personalities. It is never a powerful, aggresive, oaky, or big wine and always offers immediate drinkability. It has the ability to age well for 10 -12 years."
    PEARSON'S PRICE $29.99 . . . assorted six bottle price $26.99
