FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING, JULY 9th: BRUCE IS BACK! NEW WINES, NEW LINE FROM GOTHAM

Posted by Admin on Jul 09, 2010 - 03:46 PM

BRUCE CLUGSTON IS BACK AT PEARSON’S!
THIS FRIDAY NIGHT JULY 9TH FROM 5-8 PM AND HE IS BRINGING ALONG WITH HIM HIS NEW LINE OF GOTHAM WINES: WINE MEN OF GOTHAM. YOU WILL BE THE FIRST IN THE WASHINGTON DC MARKET TO TASTE THE BRAND NEW LINE OF WINES FROM GOTHAM.

The Wine Men of Gotham is homage to the Wise Men of Gotham; an allusion to the reputed simplicity of villagers of Gotham England. If tradition is to be believed, the Gothamites were not so very simple but simply ‘wise enough to play the fool’; in variety of ways they merely acted silly to gain their ends. Wine Men of Gotham reflects the sincerity of the loveable fools of Gotham.

Gotham is produced by husband and wife Bruce Clugston and Fiona White Bruce and Fiona visited New York City in 2004; they had such a good time they thought that the pet name for NYC would be make a great wine label. Gotham city of course became famous in the Batman comics, but the sobriquet was first used by Washington Irving in a satirical set of short stories published in Salmagundi around 1807, parodying the people and dignitaries of New York. His inspiration surely came from the mythical wise men of Gotham, who are said to have feigned madness to avoid paying taxes.

There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared. If you plan to attend THE TASTING, please RSVP to David@PearsonsWine.com

TRITON 2008

On my trip to Spain I had the pleasure of tasting this is new blockbuster wine from winemaker Amy Hopkinson and importer Jorge Ordonez. Made of 100% Tinta de Toro (Also known as Tempranillo). The winery is located in the village of Villanueva de Campean near Zamora in the historic area known as de la Tierra del Vino, The Land of Wine. And also near the appellation of Toro. The estate is being farmed using organic and biodynamic practices, and the old vines for this wine range in age from 45-104 years. Soils are a nice mixture with a lot of sand and river rocks, and sun strata red clay typical for Toro. Triton has also been aged in French oak for 15 months.

After tasting a 3 day old barrel sample of Triton I instantly knew this wine was something special. I tasted Triton several more times on the trip and it kept getting better. I was absolutely taken aback by the beautiful violet aromas and how well balanced this wine was. Even though it is big wine there is a certain elegance with nice ripe plums, great spice, some chocolate notes, but also nice smoky and meaty notes on the palate. And then to find out that this wine is half the cost of what it should be. It is not only a spectacular wine but a wine you get at a spectacular value and price. There were only 4200 cases produced and we have already sold out half of our stock after one day of news getting out that we were receiving this wine. It will not last much longer.

PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $19.99

PEARSON'S SPECIAL CASE PRICE . . . $17.99 each

WE WILL ALSO BE SHOWING:

BOTANI MOSCATEL 2008

SUMMER WINE OF THE YEAR

This dry muscalel is a perfect accompaniment for all types of seafood and summertime dishes. Great for this time of the year and all the get togethers. This is a personal favorite of mine also as we had the pleasure of tasting this wine in Jorge Ordonez’s hometown of Malaga while eating the some of the best and  freshest seafood in the world this wine was perfect.

Wine Advocate 90 points: “The 2008 Botani is 100% Moscatel de Alejandria fermented 70% in stainless steel and 30% in French oak. Medium straw-colored, it has an alluring perfume of spring flowers, honey, spice box, and tropical fruits. Smooth-textured, ripe, dry, and mouth-filling, this expressive effort is an excellent match for sushi and Thai food."

Reg. $21.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $14.99

TARIMA MONASTRELL 2009

This is another wine that Jorge Ordonez delivers big time at a value price of under $10. I had already knew that this wine was very good after tasting it with Jorge in Spain. Once I had found out that it was in the US, I had Michael, Larry, and Erick sample the wine and they all fell in love with it also.

This is a joint venture of Jorge Ordonez and the Juan Gil family located in Jumilla Spain.
Wine Advocate 87 points: “This is the first vintage of this wine; the 2009 Tarima is 100% Monastrell sourced from 25-35 year old vines and raised in stainless steel with lees stirring. Medium crimson-colored, the nose reveals fragrant blueberries and underbrush. Firm on the palate with plenty of savory fruit, it is meant for drinking over the next 3 years.  Great with grilled meats, burgers, pasta, cheese and crackers or pizza. This could also be served without food to folks who love Cabernet and/or Shiraz.could also be served without food to folks who love Cabernet and/or Shiraz.”

TUESDAY NIGHT WINE TASTING: ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS WITH WINEMAKER/ OWNER HARRY WETZEL AT PEARSON'S MAY 11, 2010 5-8 pm

Posted by Admin on May 11, 2010 - 08:44 PM

Alexander Valley Vineyards is celebrating it’s 35th anniversary and wants Pearson’s to help them Celebrate. Please join us as we will have Owner/ Winemaker Harry Wetzel of Alexander Valley Vineyards with us here at Pearson’s Tuesday night May 11, 2010 from 5-8 pm.

ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS

Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley was mostly prune orchards and pastures when, in 1962, Maggie and Harry Wetzel purchased a large portion of a homestead built by Cyrus Alexander, the valley’s nineteenth century namesake. Here, in a rural community of family farms and ranches, the Wetzel family settled. They raised livestock, cultivated bountiful gardens and restored Alexander’s original home, making it the center of family life. With an eye to their neighbors in nearby Napa Valley, the Wetzels boldly planted premium grape varieties, among the first in the area. Then the family built a small winery.

Hank Wetzel, oldest son of Maggie and Harry, produced Alexander Valley Vineyard’s first wine in 1975. His wife Linda set up the books and managed the winery office. AVV quickly established a reputation for estate grown wines with distinctive varietal character. Acclaimed for crisp Chardonnay and luscious Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley Vineyards brought recognition to the appellation and became a leading winery in Sonoma County.

Hank’s younger sister, Katie Wetzel Murphy, joined the family business in 1979. An enthusiastic ambassador, she travels the country, fueling the family-owned winery’s reputation. Today the Alexander Valley is a prominent appellation known worldwide as the source of elegant, age worthy wines. The Wetzel Family Estate now grows fourteen grape varieties, on diverse sites stretching from the banks of the Russian River up onto the hillsides. Each grape variety is matched to a specific soil type and exposure. Vineyard Manager Mark Houser and Winemaker Kevin Hall work as a team to maximize fruit flavor in the vineyard and to create balanced wines that capture the grapes’ varietal characteristics. Hank Wetzel oversees the vineyard and winery operations, and his wife Linda continues to oversee administration..

Alexander Valley Vineyards produces 100,000 cases annually, 17 varietal wines and proprietary blends. Seventy-five percent of AVV’s production is red wine. Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon constitute roughly half of total production. Other varietals include Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Gewurztraminer, Syrah, Sangiovese, Viognier, and Cabernet Franc.

CYRUS, a limited production, proprietary red wine, named in honor of the pioneer Cyrus Alexander, is AVV’s benchmark, honoring the past while signaling the future. Hank Wetzel explains, “Cyrus is a statement, our ultimate achievement. With this wine, we express our history, tradition, and excellence.”

At Alexander Valley Vineyards, where the future, viability, and sheer existence are so closely tied to the land that produces their grapes, they are continually taking steps to follow sustainable practices while reducing the environmental footprint. Nothing goes to waste at Alexander Valley Vineyards. Grape stems and pomace (the solid remains of the grapes after they are pressed) for instance, are composted, turning them into a nutrient-rich material that can be used in the vineyards. Glass bottles and the foils that protect the cork are regularly recycled.

At Alexander Valley Vineyards, they ferment and age their wine in French and California oak barrels. AVV buy their barrels from more than a dozen different cooperages, and replace about a quarter of them every year. (The old ones go to home winemakers or get reincarnated as planters.) The staves are harvested from French or American oak forests and left to cure for two years before being toasted to varying degrees. AVV winemaker Kevin Hall then mentally matches particular barrels to individual wines. “The different toasts will affect the smoky or caramel flavors imparted to the wines,” he says. The actual forest the tree is grown in will affect whether the wine acquires spicy notes. “For Syrah I like to choose barrels that have a caramel-type toast to them. For Zinfandel, I look to a wood source that has a lot of spice.”

With over thirty vintages behind them, the Wetzel family is philosophical about the success of Alexander Valley Vineyards and the wine business in general. The financial downturn and industry consolidation pose challenges for many producers. Yet the Wetzel family, owners of AVV, say the winery is well-positioned to continue its record of growth, allowing the winery to thrive over the next 35 years.  “This is a way of life for us,” Hank says. “We have all learned to be patient and plan for the long term.”

ALEXANDER VALLEY TEMPTATION ZINFANDEL 2006
Winery Notes: “When we added Temptation to our family of Zins, we wanted to show how the grape California has adapted as its own can wear many faces. If the Redemption Zin is a bit more regal, then Temptation is fun-loving and pretty laid back.

This new release displays all the trademark elements of a fine Zinfandel from Sonoma, where this varietal gained its fame. It's predominately a blend of Zin from Sonoma's Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. There's also some Zinfandel from Solano to the east of Napa, adding some nuance to this great value Zin. We suggest picking up a few bottles, kicking back and enjoying the fun flavors here of Bing cherries, blackberries and cranberries along with notes of cloves and cinnamon."
Reg. $16.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE $12.99

ALEXANDER VALLEY SIN ZINFANDEL 2007
Winery Notes: “Sin Zin is arguably our best known wine. Most folks are initially drawn in by the label, but once they taste what's inside the bottle, they quickly realize that this is no novelty wine. That may be why Sin Zin remains one of the most popular Zins in America and why, according to Wine & Spirits magazine, it's the Zin of choice in many of the nation's restaurants.

The 2007 is a classic Alexander Valley Zinfandel. In the glass, you'll find generous aromas of black cherries, blueberries, vanilla and spice. The big fruit notes are apparent right at the front end. The hefty flavors of cherries and plums carry this wine right through the mid-palate, paving the way for a lengthy finish, where a touch of spicy oak rears its head.”
Reg. $22.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $16.99

ALEXANDER VALLEY REDEMPTION ZINFANDEL 2007
Winery Notes: “Original Sin is in the Alexander Valley. You must trek to Dry Creek for Redemption. Of course we are talking Zinfandel here, as in Sin Zin, our signature Zin, and Redemption Zin, the wonderfully lush companion.

Several years ago, we received some great lots of Zin from vineyards in the Dry Creek Valley, about a dozen miles to the west of our estate. It presented a perfect opportunity to make a Zinfandel with a personality different from Sin Zin, illustrating the distinctive qualities of each region.

Since then, we've been producing a Zinfandel that captures the best the Dry Creek has to offer. The 2006 Redemption Zin shows substantial blackberry and plum flavors along with a healthy dose of black pepper and subtle notes of orange peel and glycerin.”
Reg. $29.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $22.99

GET THE WICKED SAMPLER:  TEMPTATION, SIN, & REDEMPTION IN A 3 PACK CASE ALL FOR $49.99!

ALEXANDER VALLEY GEWURZ 2009
Winery Notes: “One of the lessons we've learned over nearly a half century of grape growing is that there are certain varietals that are perfect for the Alexander Valley and there are others that are best left to other appellations. Gewurztraminer is one of those. It grows best in cooler climates like Mendocino's Potter Valley, the source for this 2009 Gewurz.

This latest release shows an expressive nose of pineapple, lychee and pear and flavors of grapefruit and apple along with a big mineral component. You'll also notice the wine exhibits a creamy mouthfeel, nicely balanced by the wine's acidity.

We know a lot of folks have a hard time pronoucing the name of this grape. So we've made it easier for you. We call this wine simply "Gewurz."
Reg. $13.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $9.99

ALEXANDER VALLEY DRY ROSE OF SANGIOVESE 2009
Winery Notes: “While rosé can be produced from any red grape, we think Sangiovese provides all the elements to make a world-class rosé, particularly depth of fruit and great acidity. We sourced the fruit for the 2009 from a single vineyard that was farmed with the intent of making a rosé from the grapes.

The fruit was picked at 22.6 Brix, allowing us to make a lower alchohol rosé. Harvest began before dawn so that the grapes would be cold when they arrived at the winery. The fruit was then cold-soaked for 6 hours and the juice bled off when it had attained the dusty salmon color we were seeking.

This new release is a worthy successor to the 2008, which critic Robert Parker called the best domestic rosé he tasted last year. This perfect spring and summer sipper exhibits notes of strawberry and peach along with a nice minerality. The finish is not only dry, but surprisingly lengthy.”
Reg. $16.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $12.99

ALEXANDER VALLEY CHARDONNAY 2008
Winery Notes: “Winemaker Kevin Hall's philosophy has always been to produce wines that truly reflect the qualities of the vineyard. That approach is particularly true with this 2008 Estate Chardonnay. To make sure the crisp fruit shines through, he fermented and aged 70% of the juice in stainless steel. The remainder went into barrel, where it was subjected to frequent lees stirring before being aged in French oak.

Those steps produced a beautifully textured Chardonnay that exhibits lush apple and pear flavors along with some tropical fruit notes, just a touch of vanilla and a hint of minerality. Kevin's approach also makes this a food-friendly Chard, perfect for dishes ranging from roast chicken to sauteed bay scallops.”
Reg. $21.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $14.99

ALEXANDER VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007
Winery Notes: “There are few places better suited for Cabernet Sauvignon than the Alexander Valley, which is why it's become our signature wine. Warm summer days tempered by morning coastal fogs combine to help create a refined Cabernet that is at once approachable upon release, yet with the fortitude to develop with time.

In the glass, the 2007 Estate Cabernet displays big aromas of black cherry, cassis, cocoa powder and plum and flavors of cassis, black cherry and plum along with soft, integrated tannins. This is certainly a great wine to serve with beef, whether braised short ribs or a Tuscan steak rubbed with olive oil and rosemary.”
Reg. $$26.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $16.99

ALEXANDER VALLEY CYRUS 2005
Winery Notes: “Our marquee wine, a true reflection of the best of the Alexander Valley, earns its stripes in a number of ways. Winemaker Kevin Hall selects the best vineyard lots and decides what blend will highlight the Cabernet Sauvignon that is the foundation of CYRUS. The wine is then aged for two years in French oak followed by 8 months in the bottle.

The Cabernet Sauvignon for the 2005 hails from three different vineyards, a blend of old and new vines offering notes of black cherry and cassis. To balance those big flavors, Kevin blended in equal parts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Add a dollop of Malbec and Petit Verdot and you get a multi-dimensional wine offering beautiful flavors of dark cherries, plums and chocolate.”
Reg. $69.99 . . . PEARSON’S SALE PRICE . . . $49.99

SEQUANA VINEYARDS

Rising Star to All Star – James MacPhail quickly earned a reputation for bringing out the best in single vineyard Pinot Noir. Beginning in the mid-1990s, he carefully designed his winemaking education by working with Pinot Noir leaders Merry Edwards and Gary Farrell. Today, James is dedicated exclusively to producing small lots of distinctive Pinot Noir. James enjoys industry-wide respect for his consistent track record, producing prized wines from vineyards in the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley appellations under his own label, MacPhail Family Wines.

His acclaimed wines captured the attention of industry veteran Tom Selfridge. In 2007, Tom approached James and asked him to create a new winery – Sequana. James accepted the leadership role because, “It gives me the rare opportunity to work with vineyards in two of California’s finest Pinot Noir appellations: Green Valley of Russian River Valley and Santa Lucia Highlands.” Sequana is his only project other than his own label, MacPhail Family Wines.

James has cultivated close relationships with the finest growers in the cool climate regions of the California coast. Mindful of the strong connection between vineyard and grape quality, he works only with sustainably-grown grapes. All the vineyards are small, family-owned and eco-friendly. “These farmers really share my passion,” he says. A modern man who enjoys his iPod and Blackberry, James works in the gentle world of traditional winemaking. He makes his Pinot Noirs by hand in small batches, using cold masceration and native yeasts. These techniques respect the characteristic of each single vineyard, amplifying the aromas and flavors. “My goal is to express each vineyard’s personality,” says James.

A native of Marin County, California, James grew up in a family that balanced successful business ventures with world travel, time at the family dairy on the coast, sports, art and music. Today, as a star in the world of Pinot Noir, James enjoys travel, competitive swimming. He also plays the bagpipe and classical piano. His home is outside the town of Healdsburg, in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley.

SARMENTO VINEYARD

The Santa Lucia Highlands overlook Monterey County’s Salinas Valley. The southeast facing slopes benefit from morning sun, followed by afternoon sea breezes and moderate nighttime temperatures. Vines develop deep roots in the alluvial soils deposited over ancient marine terraces. This region, with its long growing season, allows Pinot Noir to flourish, producing wines characterized by flavors of wild cherry and earthiness.

Winegrower James MacPhail describes this setting as “nothing short of spectacular.” The Sarmento Vineyard sits on benchlands of ancient, tilted alluvial soils topped with rock-studded sandy loam. Grapes for the Sarmento Pinot Noir come from two separate 10-year-old vineyard blocks – each with a unique clone. This family-owned, sustainably-farmed vineyard benefits from its southeast exposure and cool climate, allowing the grapes to ripen fully.

Wine Spectator 92 points: “Deliciously complex, with a rich range of flavors built around loamy currant, blackberry, plum and sassafras. Gets more interesting with every sip. Best from 2010 through 2015.

Winery Notes: “Pinot Noir specialist James MacPhail has complete control over the creation of Sequana’s single-vineyard wines. Grapes were hand-picked and hand-sorted, then cold-soaked prior to fermentation to maximize flavor and color extraction.

In small open-topped tanks, each block was fermented separately, using primarily native yeasts. Other lots were fermented with yeasts unique to each individual lot. Hand punch-downs extracted and elevated the Pinot Noir flavors and the wine was aged sur lie in French oak barrels for 11 months. Displaying the classic qualities of the Santa Lucia Highlands, this silky Pinot Noir has pretty floral and citrus aromas. Warm Asian spices accompany bright, lasting flavors of citrus, rose petal and cherry.”

One of the smallest appellations on the Sonoma Coast, Green Valley of Russian River Valley has a cool climate, a result of the fog that comes from the Pacific Ocean each evening. The cooler weather and welldrained Goldridge soils create an idyllic climate for growing Pinot Noir, yielding complex, elegant wines with well-balanced acidity. Pinot Noir achieves greatness here. The sustainably-farmed Dutton Family Ranch is located on gently sloping hillsides in the cool Green Valley of Russian River Valley. Three separate two-acre blocks are planted on well-drained Goldridge soils atop ancient sandstone marine terraces. The eight-year-old vines were planted with specifications on vine density, slope and direction, allowing exposure to both morning and afternoon sun. Four unique clones of Pinot Noir enhance the intrinsic complexity of this single-vineyard wine. The Dutton family has played a pivotal role in shaping the wine quality of the Russian R iver Valley.

Wine Enthusiast 92 points: “Green Valley is the coolest part of Russian River Valley and the wine shows the wind and fog in its crisp acidity and minty quality. But there’s a wealth of roasted cherries, along with rich smoky cedar, and the mouthfeel is silky and refined. Should develop over the next six years.”

Inviting aromas of dark rose and lavender complement the wine’s plush, round texture. Full flavors of warm spice, cranberry and cherry last through the long, fruit-filled finish.”

SUNDAWG RIDGE VINEYARD

One of the smallest appellations on the Sonoma coast, Green Valley of the Russian River Valley has a cool climate, a result of the fog that comes from the Pacific Ocean each evening. The cooler weather and well-drained Goldridge soils create an idyllic climate for growing Pinot Noir, yielding complex, elegant wines with well-balanced acidity. Pinot Noir achieves greatness here.

At 280 feet elevation, among rolling hills, old apple orchards and chestnut groves, the Sundawg Ridge Vineyard sits above the fog many mornings. This 6.9-acre, sustainably farmed vineyard was planted by the Kensler Family in 1999 and benefits from exceptional exposure, temperate microclimate and mineral rich Goldridge soils.

Wine Enthusiast 97 points: “This distinctive Pinot Noir...is totally dry and silky and firm in acidity, yet soft in fine tannins. You might call it noble. It's eruptive in cherries, sweet smoky bacon, raspberry granola and oaky sandalwood. Gorgeous, seductive and brilliant, a truly great Pinot Noir that's impeccable now.”

Winery Notes: “Pinot Noir specialist James MacPhail has complete control over the creation of Sequana’s single vineyard wines. Grapes were hand-picked and hand-sorted, then cold-soaked prior to fermentation to maximize flavor and color extraction.

Sundawg Ridge produces wines with a wide spectrum of rich aromas and flavors: wild berry, Bing cherry, cranberry, sweet spice and earthiness. This medium-bodied, layered wine has soft tannins, bright acidity and a lingering finish.”

MACALLAN SCOTCH TASTING WEDNESDAY APRIL 21 5-8 PM

Posted by Admin on Apr 20, 2010 - 05:52 PM

A local farmer named Alexander Reid obtained a license to run a legal distillery in an area called Easter Elchies House in 1824. Roderick Kemp bought the distillery 70 years later and began establishing The Macallan as an international brand. The Macallan from the Speyside region of Scotland is considered by many to be the world's finest single-malt whiskey, earning monikers such as "the Rolls Royce of single malts" and "the Dom Perignon of Scotch." Throughout its long history, connoisseurs of fine scotch have held it in high esteem, and today it is one of the best known and loved single malts on the world market.

And on Wednesday April 21 we will be holding a great Macallan Scotch Tasting with our good friend Greg Brake from
5-8 pm. Don't miss out it will be a fun night!
There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP to David@PearsonsWine.com

CAKEBREAD CELLARS

In 1972, Jack Cakebread was under commission as photographer for Nathan Chroman's photographic history "The Treasury of American Wines." He stopped one day in the Napa Valley to see family friends, the Sturdivants, an elderly couple who acquired their 22- acre Rutherford ranch in 1946, and had decided to sell it. With the understanding that the Sturdivants could live on the ranch as long as they wished, Jack and Dolores Cakebread purchased it, founding Cakebread Cellars.

So, at age 43, Jack Cakebread embarked on his fifth career, winemaking. Born in 1930, his first pursuits were on his family's orchard ranch and in 1948 as partner with his father in Cakebread's Garage. In 1950 Jack married Dolores Cakebread and while in the Air Force with the Strategic Air Command in North Africa, he developed an interest in photography. In 1959, he undertook photographic studies under the master of landscape, Ansel Adams, and established Cakebread Photography. A 14-year photographic career followed, pursued simultaneously with the family auto repair business, which Jack had purchased from his father in 1963.

Cakebread Cellars started from scratch in 1973. The property was predominantly pasture; the few existing Sauvignon Vert, Malvasia, Early Burgundy and other obscure vines were not only useless for fine wine production but in some cases unidentifiable. Consultation with the University of California at Davis determined that the best varieties to plant were Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. While his construction of a small laboratory and winery building progressed over the next two years, Jack enrolled in the Viticulture and Enology program at University of California at Davis. Until 1978, when his youngest son, Bruce, joined his father in winemaking, Jack Cakebread produced all his own wines; the first was a 1973 Chardonnay followed by a 1974 Cabernet Sauvignon. During this period, a number of vintages of Zinfandel were also produced; suspended in 1981, production of this varietal was resumed with the 1993 vintage.

The first harvest from Cakebread's own vines yielded a small harvest of 1976 Sauvignon Blanc. During this period, Jack Cakebread decided to blend his Cabernet Sauvignon with a special clone of Cabernet Franc rather than with Merlot: the original plot of vines, planted in the proportion of ten percent Cabernet Franc to 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, provided the basis for two decades of vintages of Cakebread Cellars Rutherford Reserve.

To Cakebread Cellar's original 22 acres, an additional twelve, adjacent to the original property, were added in 1982 and planted in Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for Cakebread's Rutherford Reserve. In 1985, eleven more acres in the Rutherford area, called the Cakebread Hill Ranch, were acquired and also planted in Cabernet vines. In mid-1987, the purchase of the 25-acre River Ranch brought total acreage to 75, all of which lies in the Rutherford appellation. The ranch was entirely replanted in 1991, 1992 and 1993 in the wake of California's phylloxera crisis. In 1999, an acquisition added substantial vineyard acreage on Howell Mountain, now called Dancing Bear Ranch, from which a single-vineyard red wine is produced.

Cakebread also draws on 400 acres of vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot and Pinot Noir over which the Cakebreads exercise either complete control or start-to-finish management and decision- making authority. Approximately half of these, located in the cooler microclimates to the south in Carneros, are the source of the winery's Chardonnay grapes; roughly half of the remaining acres are in Sauvignon Blanc vineyards located in Rutherford near the Cakebread winery and the other half are in Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Stag's Leap, Rutherford and Oakville areas. Among the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes purchased, special blocks from the acclaimed Vine Hill Ranch in Oakville yield the single-vineyard Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon.

CAKEBREAD SAUVIGNON BLANC NAPA 2008
Winery Notes: "Our 2008 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc displays a beautifully fragrant nose of ripe pomelo, Golden delicious apple, honeydew melon, lime and mineral, with little of the herbaceousness that sometimes characterizes the variety. On the fleshy, full-bodied palate, ripe melon, grapefruit, kiwi and lemon-lime flavors lead to a long, flavorful finish enlivened by bright mineral tones. "Golden" and "sun-kissed" are words that pop to mind when sipping this delicious Sauvignon Blanc, which makes both a wonderful apèritif and a delectable companion to simply prepared seafood, poultry and vegetarian entrees. Enjoy it over the next 1- 2 years."

Winery Notes: "Our 2006 Red Hills Lake County Zinfandel opens with a lavish nose of toasted black plum, sweet black cherry and wild blackberry fruit, with cracked black pepper, black licorice and briary spice tones completing the varietal portrait. On the dense, full-bodied palate, the wine's potent black fruit flavors are impressively deep and concentrated, while the finish showcases the zesty black pepper spiciness unique to Zinfandel. While this youthfully intense Zin is delicious now with hearty foods like grilled pepper steak, barbecued ribs and spicy, red- sauced pastas, its classic structure and deep reserves of fruit ensure it will age beautifully for another 5-7 years."

CAKEBREAD MERLOT NAPA 2005

CAKEBREAD DANCING BEAR RANCH HOWELL MT 2006

On the beautifully structured palate, the wine delivers intensely concentrated blackberry, blackcurrant, wild cherry and ripe fig flavors balanced by firm acidity and round, silky tannins. Built for aging and with a deep core of fruit that unfolds in a lengthy, spice-and-mineral tinged finish, this dramatic mountain red makes compelling drinking now, yet its tight-knit structure argues for another 7-10 years of bottle age."

HONIG VINEYARD & WINERY

Honig Vineyard & Winery is a small, family owned and operated winery located in Rutherford, the heart of the Napa Valley. They have been making wine since 1980 and focus exclusively on hand-crafted Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The family is dedicated to preserving the integrity of the Napa Valley, through quality wines, sustainable farming practices and community involvement.

In 1964, Louis Honig purchased a 68-acre ranch in the heart of the Napa Valley and planted it with Sauvignon blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. For the next few years, Louis sold the grapes to neighboring wineries with the dream of retiring one day from his San Francisco advertising business and making wine from his vineyard in Rutherford.

Before he could realize his dream, Louis passed away, leaving the estate to his children and grandchildren. In 1981, as a tribute to his legacy, the family rallied together to produce several hundred cases of Louis Honig Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard's old tractor barn. The wine won a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair, and thus, the winery was born.

In 1984, at the age of 22, Louis' grandson, Michael Honig, took over management of the vineyard and winery. With a lot of hard work and a beat up pickup truck, Honig managed to get their Sauvignon Blanc into most fine restaurants in California. From there, production and distribution grew. In 1987, in addition to the Sauvignon Blanc for which they were already known, they began producing small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. Family members Regina Weinstein joined them in 1997 and Steven Honig in 2000.

What began as a small garage winery has become a team of people who work collaboratively to run an inspiring and socially responsible business.

The Honig family donates wine to charity auctions all over the country, they host political and community events at their vineyard, and they are active in the sustainable farming movement. Today, with winemaker Kristin Belair, the family produces Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Honig wines, which were once only available in one San Francisco restaurant, are now on the wine lists of hundreds of fine restaurants across the country. And Louis Honig's vision of bringing his family together to share in the beauty and bounty of Napa Valley, while producing outstanding wines, has become a reality.

HONIG SAUVIGNON BLANC NAPA VALLEY 2008
Honig's Sauvignon Blanc is bright and fresh with grapefruit, lemongrass and lime aromas that carry over to the palate. In the mouth, the wine tends toward the tropical. The fruit comes from Honig's sustainably managed vineyards, and it is finished in a combination of large, neutral oak casks and stainless tanks.
The Wine Advocate 89 points: "Consistently one of the finest Sauvignons made in California, Honig's 2008 (30,000 cases produced) is a blend of 99% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Semillon from prime Napa Valley real estate. It exhibits crisp fig and melon notes intermixed with hints of beeswax and crushed rocks. Drink this medium-bodied, stylish, attractive white over the next year. "

Wine Spectator: "Fragrant, with perfumed notes to the pea blossom, passion fruit and gooseberry flavors, which are lively and spicy, with good intensity and an almond skin finish. Drink now."

HONIG CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY 2006
Honig did a great job overcoming the challenges of the 2006 growing season, and ultimately produced a really lovely Cabernet Sauvignon. Mouthwatering black fruit aromas are complemented by cookie spices and chocolate undertones that are reflected on the palate. In the mouth the wine's sweet fruit is balanced by medium tannins and a long, spicy finish.
Wine Spectator 89 points: "Creamy oak leads to rich, intense, full-bodied currant, anise, sage and mineral flavors that are tightly wound. Needs aeration or short-term cellaring. Best from 2010 through 2016."

Winery Notes : "Vibrant ripe red fruit aromas, framed by spice, vanilla and tea. Round and supple on the palate, finishing with lengthy, rich cocoa power tannins."

SEGHESIO VINEYARDS

The Seghesio Story begins in 1886 when Edoardo Seghesio departed his family's vineyards in Piedmonte, Italy for a new life in America. Like so many immigrants, he was drawn to Northern Sonoma County and the Italian Swiss Colony, to follow his passion for winemaking. The "colony," as it was known, hired immigrants for three year stints, providing room and board and then, a lump sum at the end of those three years enabling employees to buy land or set up a business in their new home.

Soon, Edoardo rose through the ranks to winemaker. Yet, he yearned for home. The Colony's manager repeatedly encouraged him to stay and finally, it was his niece and the opportunity to purchase land that convinced Edoardo to remain. That young girl, Angela Vasconi and Edoardo were married in 1893. In 1895, they purchased a modest home in northern Alexander Valley, less for the home than the surrounding 56 acres Edoardo recognized as ideal vineyard land. They planted the "Home Ranch" that year to what has become the family's lifeline - Zinfandel.

From the time of Angela's death until the mid 1970s, the Seghesio Family flourished in the bulk wine business, producing most of the red wine made in Sonoma County. At their largest, 1,700,000 gallons were produced between the original winery in Chianti and the Healdsburg winery. Yet, as the industry evolved, so did the Seghesio family when in 1983, the first wines were bottled under the Seghesio label at the hands of Ted Seghesio, a fourth generation family winemaker.

Ted was the not only the winemaker but sold and delivered wine. In 1986, his cousin Peter Seghesio joined the business and began to set up a distribution network nationwide. By 1993, the Seghesio brand had grown to 130,000 cases of not only the family's zinfandel and Italian varietals, but also Chardonnay, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc and both red and white table wine. It was in that year that the younger generation was given control of the winery. Fortunately, they too shared a passion for the land and a desire to produce wines they were passionate about. They turned their focus to the vineyards and eliminated all but the wines we grow reducing production to 30,000 cases.

Today, they are proud to passionately produce almost exclusively estate wines, some from those same vineyards Edoardo and Angela first planted in the late 1800s.

SEGHESIO SONOMA COUNTY ZINFANDEL 2008
Year after year, Ted Seghesio releases some of the best Zinfandels on the market. The Sonoma Zin, which combines fruit from Home Ranch, River Road, Lone Oak, San Lorenzo and Cortina Vineyards balances the sweet briar fruit California Zin is known for, with sultry spices understones and fine tannins without ever being over the top. Balanced and food friendly.
The Wine Advocate 89 points: "The 2008 Zinfandel Sonoma offers up copious amounts of blue, red, and black fruits as well as excellent purity, medium to full body, a supple texture, and enough acidity to provide vibrancy. It is a pure, elegant, substantial Zinfandel to drink over the next 3-4 years. " Wine Spectator: "Briary and zesty, with dried sage and wild berry aromas and tightly wound cracked pepper, dried cherry and licorice flavors that finish with slightly rustic tannins. Best from 2011 through 2014."

SEGHESIO ALEXANDER VALLEY BARBERA 2007
The Wine Advocate 89 points : "The outstanding 2007 Barbera's dark ruby/purple color is followed by loads of briery, berry fruit, earth, herbs, pepper, and spice. Gutsy and zesty, it is a delicious, medium-bodied red with abundant personality. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years."
REG . . . $33.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $25.99

SEGHESIO SONOMA COUNTY OLD VINE ZINFANDEL 2007
The Wine Advocate 90 points : "The 2007 Zinfandel Old Vine (a selection from the oldest vineyards) reveals a dense ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a floral, blueberry and black raspberry- scented nose, a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, and serious tannin in the background. Textured, rich, and long with considerable upside, it can be drunk now or cellared for a decade. "

Winery Notes : "Scents of raspberries and blueberries intertwined with briar patch spices. Ripe raspberry and blueberry flavors persist with a hint of creamy oak. The 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel possesses a silky and refined texture with a juicy character and juicy acidity. Integrated tannins smooth the finish. Balanced and delicious with 2007 vintage elegance."

DOMAINE L'HORTUS

Domaine l'Hortus is the property of Jean Orliac, one of the great innovators of Pic St Loup. As a student Orliac spent his holidays rock climbing, unable to resist the challenge of the imposing 638m crag of rock which gives its name to this wine region. While climbing Orliac saw another challenge, that of a fledgling wine region which could one day be a great appellation. He decided to combine his training as an agricultural engineer, his desire to work outdoors, and a family winemaking heritage in the creation of a great wine estate. Jean Orliac first rented vines in 1978, but within two years he purchased a barren plot between the two peaks of the region, the Pic St Loup and the Montagne de l'Hortus. It took time to establish the vineyard, and consequently the first vintage for Domaine de l'Hortus wasn't until 1990. By 1995 he had completed the construction of his winery, an intriguing building made almost entirely from wood.

In the Languedoc of the south of France north of Montpellier lies a hidden valley nestled between limestone cliffs where winemaker and owner Jean Orliac found this extraordinary site for a winery. An avid rock climber, Orliac found this site while climbing Montagne de l'Hortus when he was a student of agricultural engineering. The site is known locally as "L'Hortus," the Garden, where Orliac blends the Rhone's Roussanne with the Languedoc's Chardonnay and Viognier in a complete white with structure and freshness. The nose shows white citrus, pineapple, and white peach with a hint of mint. In the mouth it reveals stone fruits and white flowers in a balanced, nuanced frame. Try with grilled fish, salads, or chevre. (Note: this Wineshop favorite has just returned after a five-year absence.)

The two domaine wines of interest at Domaine l'Hortus are the Cuvée Classique, now renamed Bergerie de l'Hortus is 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre, and aged in used barrels. There are also whites produced, using Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. In addition Jean Orliac also produces wines under the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation at Clos du Prieur, a property about 20 km west of Pic St Loup.

BERGERIE DE L'HORTUS ROUGE PIC SAINT LOUP 2007
The Wine Advocate 90 points : "The l'Hortus red 2007 Coteaux du Languedoc Pic Saint- Loup Bergerie Classique is - as usual for this cuvee - around 2:1 tank vinified Syrah-Grenache, with roughly 10% barrel-aged Mourvedre. Beautifully scented with ripe black fruits, marjoram, and rosemary, this offers an invigorating sense of attack and a refreshing palate of tart fresh black raspberry and cassis, underlain by grilled meats. There is a lovely, muscular leanness here, and this should perform admirably at table for several years. My notes refer to the first and smaller of two bottlings, but the unassembled components intended for the later bottling promised a result at least as impressive."

Thursday, March 18: DUCKHORN VINEYARDS WINE TASTING WITH FOUNDER AND OWNER DAN DUCKHORN

Posted by Admin on Mar 16, 2010 - 02:07 PM
Duckhorn Logo

Duckhorn Wines is one of the most recognizable wineries in the Napa valley and all over the world. And Pearson's will have the pleasure of holding a Duckhorn tasting with Owner and Founder Dan Duckhorn. Dan is very private and rarely does he attend a tasting for his wines but he will be here at Pearson's for One Night Only . . .
Thursday, March 18 from 5-8 pm.

There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared. If you plan to attend ANY OR ALL THE TASTINGS, please RSVP to David@PearsonsWine.com

DUCKHORN VINEYARDS

Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent a quarter century establishing itself as one of North America's premier producers of Bordeaux varietal wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today.

The quality of Duckhorn Vineyards' wines has always been based on a commitment to selecting the finest fruit. Whether carefully sourcing grapes from top sites in the Napa Valley or committing itself to estate vineyards, the winery was built on the belief that great wines begin in the vineyard. At Duckhorn Vineyards this has always meant an emphasis on site and terroir. Beginning in 1988, hand-selected Napa Valley properties were purchased for their estate vineyard program, guaranteeing a consistent source of high quality fruit, year after year.

Today, the winery's seven estate vineyards are located in alluvial fans of the Napa Valley and on the coveted slopes of Howell Mountain. The shallow and rocky alluvial soil drains easily, forcing the vines to send roots deep in search of water. The rocks retain the day's heat, bringing relief to the vine during cold spring mornings and foggy summer nights. Because of its topography, soils, and climate, Howell Mountain has distinctly different grape-growing conditions than the valley floor. Often during summer months, the maritime fog seeping into the Napa Valley below will not reach the mountaintop, giving Howell Mountain more sunlight and moderate temperatures.

For nearly three decades, the commitment to crafting wines of distinction has remained at the heart of the Duckhorn Vineyards philosophy. As its Napa Valley estate properties continue to mature, the winery will continue creating world-class wines from exceptional vineyards.

AND YOU WILL ALSO BE THE FIRST IN DC TO TASTE THE BRAND NEW DECOY LINE OF WINES THAT HAVE JUST BEEN RELEASED!

Since the inaugural vintage of Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine more than 20 years ago, Decoy has taken an important place in the Duckhorn Wine Company family of wines. With a reputation for delivering great quality at a remarkable price, Decoy has established a loyal following for its distinctive style, which emphasizes ready-upon-release wines that are capable of expressing their full charm and complexity in their youth. Building on this foundation, Decoy has evolved from being a single wine that supported the Duckhorn Vineyards brand to being a supporting brand for the entire Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio. Today, in addition to the Decoy Red, the Decoy lineup includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc all of which are appellation- designated, and highlight Decoy's commitment to producing attractively priced wines made from exceptional vineyard sources.

Because of Duckhorn Wine Company's unique structure, Decoy benefits from the talent, experience and expertise of all of our winemakers, each of whom has a unique area of specialization. Bill Nancarrow, our executive winemaker at Napa Valley, oversees the crafting of Decoy's Bordeaux varietal wines. Paraduxx Winemaker David Marchesi oversees Decoy Zinfandel. Goldeneye Winemaker Zach Rasmuson works alongside Migration Winemaker Neil Bernardi to produce Decoy Pinot Noir.

Like all the grapes used to make wines in the Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio, fruit for the Decoy program comes from a mix of Estate vineyards and top independent growers (primarily located in the Napa and Anderson valleys). Decisions about which lots are used in Decoy are not made until well into the winemaking process. As a result, Decoy's grapes receive the same meticulous care in the vineyard, and the same small-lot attention to detail in the winery (including hand-sorting, the use of the finest coopers and French oak, and a commitment to artful blending).

DUCKHORN DECOY SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009
Winery Notes: "Since 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has been crafting a Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc that has become a benchmark for the varietal in North America. Expanding on this rich winemaking tradition, Decoy Sauvignon Blanc allows our winemaking team the opportunity to explore a different expression of Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Made using grapes from top independent growers, our Decoy Sauvignon Blanc is fermented exclusively in stainless steel to preserve its lively aromas and bright flavors. The result is an enticing wine that highlights vibrant citrus and lemongrass layers."

DUCKHORN DECOY PINOT NOIR 2008
Winery Notes: "Building on the traditions established by our acclaimed Goldeneye and Migration Pinot Noirs, Decoy Pinot Noir continues Duckhorn Wine Company's exploration of the depth and diversity of Anderson Valley winegrowing. Decoy Pinot Noir allows our winemaking team to highlight a distinctly plush and approachable expression of Pinot Noir that is crafted for more youthful enjoyment. The resulting wine offers bright red-fruit flavors of Bing cherry, raspberry and cranberry, alongside hints of toasty oak."

DUCKHORN DECOY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007
Winery Notes: "This appealing Napa Valley bottling highlights the complexity of the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal. DUCKHORN DECOY ZINFANDEL 2008
Winery Notes: "Our Paraduxx winemaking team has been crafting a world-class red blend using Napa Valley Zinfandel since 1994. Decoy Zinfandel allows us to explore this robust and appealing grape as a stand-alone wine. It offers the concentration and complexity that has made the Napa Valley famous, while highlighting classic Zinfandel elements of raspberry, strawberry jam, white pepper, cedar and spice."

DUCKHORN VINEYARDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006
Winery Notes: "A complex blend of grapes from the greater Napa Valley and seven of its acclaimed appellations, this wine also incorporates a significant amount of fruit from our Estate vineyards. The result is a wine that strikes an effortless balance between dark fruit, oak and tannins. Classic Cabernet elements of black currant, dark cherry, plum and raspberry are accentuated by more subtle layers of mint and black olive. Though a big, structured and age-worthy wine, the tannins are beginning to soften, framing both the fruit and the oak-inspired vanilla and cocoa notes."

Wine Spectator 91 points: "Supple, harmonious, graceful and polished. Shows a pretty flash of toasty oak, with ripe currant and floral berry and pomegranate fruit that maintains its generous fruity profile on the long finish. The tannins are fine- grained."
Reg $69.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $59.99

DUCKHORN VINEYARDS HOWELL MOUNTAIN MERLOT 2004
Winery Notes: "In 1880 the St. Helena Star contended that Howell Mountain "would be to California what Medoc is to France." In 1983, Howell Mountain was approved as a viticulture appellation, confirming what the turn-of-the-century growers already knew about the uniqueness of the region. We believe that this wine will be the Medoc of our portfolio. This is a well-balanced wine with medium weight, beautiful texture, bright acid, and integrated, supple tannins. The aroma is elegant, with elements of earth, black cherry, vanilla and clove, accompanied by a slightly meaty character. On the palate, the wine is layered with rich fruit flavors, most notably blueberry, blackberry, and plum, and accented by subtle notes of lavender and sage."

Wine Enthusiast 90 points: "There's a beautiful Merlot in here but you're going to have to paddle against the powerful tannins to find it. It brings to mind the old Duckhorn Three Palms Merlots, which were similarly tough and tannic in youth, but aged well. This wine is ripe in chocolate, blackberry, cassis, coconut macaroon and plum sauce flavors, but needs four or five years to begin to come around."
Reg $79.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $64.99

DUCKHORN VINEYARDS THREE PALMS VINEYARD MERLOT 2006
Winery Notes: "Three Palms Vineyard is legendary in the world of California Merlotand for good reason. A hot site with free-draining soils, Three Palms consistently delivers focused red fruit flavors balanced by an austere minerality, which contributes to elegant aging potential. The 2006 Three Palms Vineyard Merlot delivers all the vibrant fruit one would expect, with layers of red currant, raspberry and black cherry underscored by elements of piecrust, strawberry, caramel and wet stone. The tannins are dry and elegant, leading to a long, jammy finish."
Reg $89.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $79.99

GOLDENEYE GOWAN CREEK VINEYARD 2006
Winery Notes: "Gowan Creek is the home to our new winery and offers a perfect mid-valley winegrowing location that combines warmer Anderson Valley elements with coastal fog and cooling influences from the northern end of the valley. As a result, this wine is a classic expression of Pinot Noir, with signature aromatics, lush extraction and rich texture. The nose displays the wild blueberry and blackberry layers that have come to define Gowan Creek, supported by notes of loganberry, char, black pepper and dried meats. On the palate, the attack is immense, the tannins long and the acidity persistent, all combining to create a wine with sumptuous, dark- fruit-driven complexity."

Wine Enthusiast 94 points: "There's a wild, feral quality to this fine Pinot Noir. It has forest flavors of wild mushrooms, thyme, fennel, anise and pine, along with more familiar flavors of red cherries, cola and sandalwood. Elegant and ageable. Now through 2012."

SHAFER VINEYARDS/ RUTHERFORD RANCH TUESDAY NIGHT WINE TASTING

SHAFER VINEYARDS

Shafer Vineyards traces its beginnings to 1972 when John Shafer left a 23-year career in the publishing industry and, with his family, moved to the Napa Valley to pursue a second career in wine. After purchasing a 210-acre estate in Napa Valley's Stags Leap District, the Shafer family faced the arduous task of replanting the existing vineyards, which dated to the 1920s, and terracing the steep and rocky hillsides, eventually expanding vineyard acreage to its current 50 acres.

Evolving from grape growers to vintners, the Shafers crushed their first Cabernet grapes in 1978 and began construction on their winery a year later.

The first Shafer Cabernet became a benchmark, winning the acclaimed San Francisco Vintners Club taste-off upon release and, over a decade later taking first place in an international blind tasting held in Germany, where it outranked such wines as Chateau Margaux, Chateau Latour and Chateau Palmer.

Doug Shafer became winemaker in 1983 after graduating from the University of California at Davis with a degree in enology and viticulture. A year later Elias Fernandez joined the winery as assistant winemaker. Together Doug and Elias have worked closely to forge the Shafer style of quality, consistency and elegance.

SHAFER ONE POINT FIVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91+ points : "Bright, medium ruby-red. Expressive, rather wild nose melds cassis, black cherry, tobacco, iron, mocha, leather and brown spices. A bit less plump than the 2005 version, but suave and vinous, with good cut and life to the varietally typical flavors of currant, leather, mocha and tobacco leaf. This slightly restrained, soil-driven wine still needs time to unwind and will merit a higher score if time brings more pliancy. Finishes with firm, building tannins and sneaky length."

Wine Enthusiast 90 points : "Sourced primarily from two Stags Leap Districts - the famed Hillside estate and the Borderline vineyard - this generation-and-a-half idea is a great selection for Shafer lovers who might not be able to indulge in the Hillside Select (or can't get their hands on a bottle). Sweet blackberry, plum and current fruit aromas and flavors are complemented by nuances of savory herbs, cocoa and cigar box (complete with cigars!)."

Winery Notes: "Aromas of pure, elegant black fruit, dark chocolate, and spice, followed by rich, juicy flavors of blackberry and black cherry, chocolate, and cedar, with ripe, smooth tannins and a long finish."

SHAFER MERLOT 2006

Wine Enthusiast 95 points : "Easily Shafers greatest Merlot ever. Certainly its richest, with fabulously concentrated blackberry, cherry, licorice, chocolate and cinnamon spice flavors. All this is wrapped into extraordinarily sweet, refined tannins. Addictively drinkable, but not a long ager. Best now and through 2012."

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 90 points : "Very good deep ruby-red color. Medicinal black cherry, licorice and flowers on the slightly high-toned nose, along with a suggestion of cherry skin. Dense, sweet and fruity in the mouth if still a bit youthfully tight, with a slight medicinal quality to the flavors of dark berries, black cherry and licorice. Finishes smooth and long, with firm tannins. I'd give this a year before pulling the cork."

WE WILL ALSO HAVE THIS GREAT SHAFER WINE ON SALE BUT UNFORTUNATELY WE WILL NOT HAVE THIS WINE AVAILABLE FOR TASTING:

SHAFER RELENTLESS 2006

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92-94 points : "The 2006 Relentless may be even better. It possesses an opaque purple hue as well as a grapy, smoky perfume displaying scents of roasted meats, blackberries, licorice, and charcoal. This packed and stacked, full-bodied 2006 should drink beautifully for 10-15 years."

Wine Spectator 90 points : 'Dense, rich and chewy, with tightly wound mineral, graphite, plum and berry flavors that are full-blown and concentrated. This gains depth and nuance on the finish, while retaining its structure and focus. Syrah and Petite Sirah. Drink now through 2016."

FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING: BODEGAS NEKEAS/ VEGA SINDOA WINEMAKER CONCHA VECINO AT PEARSON'S AND 2005 BORDEAUX WINE TASTING

Posted by Admin on Mar 10, 2010 - 11:04 AM
Vineyard Spanish BODEGAS NEKEAS/ VEGA SINDOA WINES

Nekeas is one of the northern most vineyards on the peninsula. Cultivation of the grapes is only possible thanks to the presence of the Sierra Perdon, which provides a mountainous barrier protecting the Nekeas Valley from the cold winds of the Pyrenees.

The valley is also caressed by the moderating influences of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean, whose essence flows up the Ebro Valley. This climate would be difficult to find elsewhere on the Iberian peninsula.

These factors results in a number of microclimes in the valley, each favoring a particular variety of grapes, such as a Grenache, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, all used to produce the excellent red wines and Viura, Chardonnay, and Muscatel, used for the succulent white wines.

Robert Parker has said of the vineyard "Bodegas Nekeas has emerged as one of the World's Best Value Wineries, and it is hard to believe the prices of some of their wines."

The cordiality of the people is deeply-rooted in the Nekeas valley. They are content to let the rich wines they produce speak for them.

VEGA SINDOA CHARDONNAY 2007

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 89 points: "Yellow-gold. Exotic, highly expressive bouquet of spicy melon, white peach, lees, marzipan and jasmine. Silky orchard and pit fruit flavors are given spine by zesty acidity and pick up a brown butter note with air. Impressively complex chardonnay with good finishing breadth and sweet persistence. You could spend three times this much on a white Burgundy and get less wine."

VEGA SINDOA EL CHAPARRAL 2008

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 88 points: "100% Garnacha. 70 Year Old Vines. Inky ruby. Exotically perfumed bouquet displays black raspberry, cherry compote, licorice and dark chocolate, plus a sexy floral overtone. Fresh, focused red and dark berry flavors are given depth by a note of bitter chocolate and framed by silky tannins. Finishes with very good clarity and mineral snap, with the black raspberry note repeating. Year in and out this is a superb value."

2005 BORDEAUX WINE TASTING

The 2005 Bordeaux Vintage wine has received such high reviews that demand for the wine continues to rise rapidly. We were fortunately able to get a few cases of some great wines and are able to get them to you at a great price that you will find are one of the best prices anywhere.

Acclaimed wine critic, Robert Parker has described the 2005 Bordeaux vintage as being "the greatest vintage produced during my 30 year career" and this is his assessment of the Vintage along with the different regions of Bordeaux.

"Historically, the finest Bordeaux vintages (including 2000, 1990, 1982, 1961, 1959, 1949, 1947 and 1945) have resulted from dry, hot weather in the summer and fall. And while Bordeaux experienced relatively severe, even drought like conditions in 2005, there were no periods of torrid heat, even in July, August and September. Other notable facts about the 2005 wines: They have some of the highest tannin levels in modern-day red Bordeaux, extremely high levels of dry extract (in other words, these are seriously concentrated wines), high alcohol levels (even higher than 2003-a vintage of record alcohol levels) and moderate acid levels (which give the best wines a fresh, lively, almost tangy character). Overall, the 2005 Bordeaux have turned out brilliantly, and 2005 does appear to be one of the most singular years of the past five decades.

Standouts of the 2005 vintage include the Graves region on the Left Bank and the Right Bank appellations of Pomerol and St-Émilion. In all three of these areas, the wines are concentrated, massive and high in tannin. However, because there is very little Cabernet Sauvignon in most of the blends (Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the favored grapes, especially in Pomerol and St-Émilion), the tannins are sweeter and the wines more approachable. In fact, many of the wines will offer compelling drinking in six to eight years, although they will continue to evolve for three decades or more. Another advantage these wines possess is that the lower-level St-Émilion and Graves offerings will not be nearly as expensive as the more famous and aristocratic names of the northern Médoc.

The 2005 wines were especially tannic in the northern Médoc communes of St-Julien, Pauillac and St- Estèphe. But, unlike the best wines of 1982, 1989 and 1990, most of the 2005s will not be approachable for 10 to 15 years-at minimum. However, past experience suggests they will require many years of cellaring-30 to 50 years, in fact. The good news is that even these tannic monsters are fresh, concentrated and well balanced.

CHATEAU LAROQUE SAINT-EMILION 2005

Wine Spectator 91 points : "Black in color. Gorgeous aromas of crushed blackberry, violet and dark chocolate lead to a full- bodied palate, with powerful, chewy tannins and loads of beautiful fresh fruit. Very extracted, but this should mellow with time. Best after 2015. 9,330 cases made."

Wine Enthusiast 91 points: "Big, rich and elegant, this wine has fine, lifted black fruits layered over dry new wood and fruit tannins. It is certainly firm, and needs at least 45 years aging, but it will develop into a sophisticated, balanced wine."
Reg $39.99 . . . PEARSON'S TASTING NIGHT SALE PRICE . . . $29.99

CHATEAU DE PEZ SAINT-ESTEPHE 2005

Created in the 15th century, Pez is the oldest domaine in Saint Estèphe. The Pontac family, who also created Haut-Brion, gave Pez its vineyards. The domaine was sold as a property of the state after the French Revolution and owned by a succession of families before it was purchased by Champagne Louis Roederer in 1995.

Located west of the town of Saint-Estèphe, Château de Pez consists of 74 continuous acres, with 59 acres planted to prime grape varieties, mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine from St-Estèphe typically matures more slowly than its southern counterparts. The soil is heavy and rich with clay, leading to wines with firm tannins and high acidity.

Wine Spectator 88 points: "Lots of smoky wood, with currant and spice that follow through to a medium-to-full body, with medium tannins and a crisp finish. Best after 2009. 12,500 cases made."

Winery Notes: "The 2005 vintage is dense in color, retaining a purplish-blue hint typical of wines that are slow to develop. The slightly toasty nose has plenty of red- and black- berry fruit and a hint of jamminess mingled with aromas of spice and tobacco. The nose is reminiscent of the 2004 vintage and is what you would expect of a wine made from very ripe grapes. It is already deliciously complex. The palate is entirely consistent with the nose. The attack is still firm at this stage but developing in a manner that instantly suggests an opulent wine. Good, well-rounded substance lingers elegantly on the palate, with silky tannins and not a trace of harshness. This is truly an exceptional wine: thoroughbred, elegant and rich."
Reg $39.99 . . . PEARSON'S TASTING NIGHT SALE PRICE . . . $29.99

CHATEAU VIEUX LAPEYRE SAINT-EMILION 2005
Winery Notes: "Winemaking in Bordeaux and the temperature control allows optimum extraction. The pumping is performed several times a day until, taste, we judge that the potential has been extracted. A vat of twenty days will always monitored by sampling taste. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked and sang in oak barrels. Livestock itself will start and last between 18 and 24 months. A taste will be constant monitoring for any breeding. The goal is not to make a decoction of oak. Oxygen passes through the wood which enhances the wine's tannins, from ennobling the wine, making them more flexible, more harmonious. Depending on the choice of hot barrels during manufacture, the aromas of fruit, vanilla and toast will be highlighted.

This wine has deep color flickering reflections of garnet. The bouquet, intense and complex, consists of a set of red fruit flavors and tobacco, wood and discreet prune confit. The structure, ample and generous, is supported by velvety tannins. A very good persistence is accompanied by a return fruity and smoky. His balance and personality are a real wine storage which can promise a bright future in a good cellar."
Reg $29.99 . . . PEARSON'S TASTING NIGHT SALE PRICE . . . $24.99

CHATEAU COTE MONTPEZAT COTES DE CASTILLON 2005

Wine Advocate 89 points: "Another sleeper of the vintage, this deep ruby/purple-colored wine possesses sweet floral, cranberry and blackberry notes along with a hint of cold steel. Medium-bodied, ripe, and forward, with loads of fruit, glycerin, and soft tannin, it should be consumed during its first 7-8 years of life."

Winery Notes: "Ideal with red meats, game, dishes with sauce such as lamprey, stew, and certain cheeses. Elaborated with a double ambition, it will be very pleasant to drink young but its soil of origin however will allows you to keep it, 10-15 more years."

VEUVE CLICQUOT/ MOET & CHANDON CHAMPAGNE TASTING FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 5-8 PM

YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND GET ALL YOUR HOLIDAY AND NEW YEAR'S EVE CHAMPAGNE!

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 5-8 PM . . . PLEASE RSVP

VEUVE CLICQUOT
Madame Clicquot's life could have been typical of that of many 18th-century young ladies in France. Born into a wealthy family, she made a good marriage to François Clicquot, who owned a champagne business, in 1798, before giving birth to a little girl called Clémentine.

However, her natural curiosity encouraged her to take an interest in the house's affairs, and, when her husband died prematurely, she decided to take up the reins of the estate.

Her strength of character and business sense transformed her family-in-law's trade into a great Champagne House.

While her representatives travelled throughout Europe and her champagne was shipped across the seas the world over, Madame Clicquot personally took charge of the cellars, choosing her motto as only one quality, the finest.

She invented the riddling table in order to obtain champagne wines that were as clear, distinct and limpid as possible. She gradually acquired land in vineyards with the best crus, which are now part of Veuve Clicquot's exceptional wine heritage. Her contemporaries already considered her as a great lady and she became known as the Grande Dame de la Champagne.

She died in 1866, in her château, surrounded by those she had loved with generosity and tenderness.

Today she holds sway over every bottle of champagne sold by Veuve Clicquot, reigning over an empire of bubbles appreciated by all connoisseurs of excellent champagne.

VEUVE CLICQUOT LA GRANDE DAME 1998 CHAMPAGNE WITH RIVA GIFT BOX
La Grande Dame is Veuve Clicquot's prestige cuvee, named after its legendary founder Madame Clicquot.

Veuve Clicquot partners with Riva to introduce the ultimate jet-set accessories with the La Grande Dame by Riva Cruiser Collection. Excellent materials, elaborate details and smooth finishing echo the iconic Riva boats of the 1960s and evoke the opulent style of La Dolce Vita.

This Limited Edition Gift Box is made of black lacquer and mahogany, with chrome and leather details and encases one Special Edition La Grande Dame 1998 bottle.

La Grande Dame 1998 has a pale gold color with jade glints. The wine is crystal clear, with unbelievably fine bubbles. On the first nose, typical Chardonnay characteristics come to the fore, with the arrival of floral and mineral aromas (acacia, ferns, chalk). By agitating the wine, scents of candied fruit (citrus fruits, apricots, quince) and sweet almond emerge, to reappear later in the mouth. After rotating the wine for a few minutes more, rare notes such as peaty malt, tobacco and delicate herbs, are gradually unveiled. This aromatic, impressively complex bouquet is confirmed in the mouth. On the palate, the wine is clear-cut and pure, perfectly balanced with a delightful silky smoothness. La Grande Dame 1998, with its lace-like construction, has a long, lively, and structured finish.

This wine has unbelievable aging potential. The 1998 vintage of La Grande Dame, the quintessence of the Veuve Clicquot style, reaches a peak of refinement, without losing its legendary strength produced by a blend including nearly two-thirds of Pinot Noir.
Wine & Spirits 95 points: "The contrast of depth and brightness, or intensity and weightlessness creates a sense of harmonic resonance in this wine. All the aromatics are potent, from the scent of rising bread dough to the red skin of an apple, all the corresponding flavors rich yet refreshing. The firmness of the acidity seems to add briskness to the mousse, leaving a clean, chiseled impression of the chalk soils in which this grew. Once in a while, there is a young beauty who will age into a more profound older beauty; La Grande Dame is part of that rare breed."
Wine Enthusiast 92 points:"A superbly ripe Champagne that has all the open generosity of the 1998 vintage. Peach and apricot aromas are followed by flavors of hazelnuts, honey and spices. Of course, it is still very young, and, like all vintages of La Grande Dame, it will age for many years."
Reg $159.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE TASTING NIGHT ONLY . . . $149.99

VEUVE CLICQUOT NV BRUT YELLOW LABEL CHAMPAGNE
Wine Spectator 88 points: "The non- vintage Veuve Clicquot is a bracing Champagne, boasting almond, honey and ginger flavors; appealing texturally, it firms up on the finish; sure to be a crowd pleaser."
Reg $39.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE TASTING NIGHT ONLY . . . $34.99

VEUVE CLICQUOT NV ROSE CHAMPAGNE
The non-vintage rosé is the end result of a desire to create a rosé champagne with a delightfully luscious, fruit-based charm. Jacques Péters, the cellarmaster, and his team wanted a champagne that would be accessible and naturally engaging while conserving Veuve Clicquot's essential values in terms of style.

Made using 50 to 60 different crus, the cuvee is based on Brut Yellow Label's traditional blend: 50 to 55% Pinot Noir, 15 to 20% Pinot Meunier, and 28 to 33% Chardonnay.

The blend includes a particularly high percentage (25-35%, sometimes 40%) of reserve wines originating from several harvests (usually 5 or 6), which ensures the consistency of the house style. The reserve wines, some of which are 9 years old, are kept separately depending on the origin of the crus and the years in which the wines were produced. This blend is completed with 12% of red wines using red grapes especially raised and selected to give a marvellous balance to this rosé.
Wine Enthusiast 91 points: "This seems drier than its stablemate, the famous Yellow Label, and is the better for it. There is an urgent freshness here, driven by red currants and tight plum skin flavors. It is lively but full in the mouth, and shows just the right bottle age."
Reg $72.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE TASTING NIGHT ONLY . . . $65.99

MOET & CHANDON CHAMPAGNE
Established in 1743 Moet and Chandon is based in Epernay boasting 500 hectares of vineyards which yields a yearly production of 26 million bottles. In 1972 Jean Remy Moet took control of the House of Moet which had founded by his grandfather some 49 years before. Despite difficulties in finding adequate supplies of grapes during the Revolution the House flourished and grew further during the Napoleonic era.

The concept of vintage Champagne made of exceptional grapes from the same year was introduced in 1840 with Moet producing their first vintage Champagne in 1842. The words "dry" and "sec" to indicate dryness (see our Types of Champagne section) first appeared on Moet labels in 1856. This was as a response to the British market who wanted a dry Champagne to drink with their meals.

By the beginning of the 20th century, Moet & Chandon was one of the major houses, due to their excellent collection of vineyards. Moet and Chandon continued to grow and in the 1960s produced 10 million bottles a year (out of a global production of 70 million).

Moet & Chandon has grown to the point where it has the largest vineyard holdings in the Champagne business. Today they own more than 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) of vineyards, and annually produces approximately 26,000,000 bottles of champagne. Despite their size Moet and Chandon continue to ensure that care and precision goes into the making of each Champagne, ensuring that their name remains synonymous with quality.

MOET & CHANDON NV BRUT IMPERIAL CHAMPAGNE
Wine Enthusiast 86 points: "A soft, floral nose open this mid-weight wine. the apple-pear aromas and flavors are ripe and slightly sweet, but a slightly dry, chalky note keeps it from becoming cloying, and its just a shade sweeter than the Brut Imperial. The chalk and apple notes play out on the moderately long finish."

CHATEAU MONTELENA WINE TASTING THURSDAY EVENING, 5PM-8PM

Posted by Admin on Dec 09, 2009 - 09:07 PM
Montelena Estate

I know the email has come out very late today but I had to make sure that I was able to secure this tasting for you all before sending out today's email.

CHATEAU MONTELENA WINE TASTING TOMORROW NIGHT

Chateau Montelena's rich history began on a chilly fall morning when Alfred L. Tubbs spaded over and inspected the soil where he thought of planting estate vineyards. He'd heard the Napa Valley was the best place to grow grapes in California. A deal was struck and in January of 1882 the San Francisco entrepreneur owned 254 acres of rugged land just two miles north of Calistoga at the base of Mount Saint Helena. The soils are well drained, stony and loose - perfect for the vine cuttings he would plant.

It took less than a decade to turn his dream into reality. First Tubbs planted his vineyards, then he built his Chateau, and in 1886 he imported a French-born winemaker. By 1896 his winery, christened Chateau Montelena (a contracted form of Mount Saint Helena), was the seventh largest in the Napa Valley.

The next chapter begins with the renaissance of Chateau Montelena Winery and the Estate vineyard. Under the leadership of James Barrett, the vineyard was cleared and replanted, and the Chateau outfitted with modern winemaking equipment. He assembled a team to oversee the vineyard and winemaking, grew and contracted for the highest-quality grapes in the Napa Valley. In 1972 wines were made for the first time.

In 1976 the "Judgement of Paris" The grand wine tasting that is a who's-who of the French wine and food establishment gathered at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Paris.

The results proved that Chateau Montelena could produce some of the world's finest wines, and that California's wine industry had come of age. This put Chateau Montelena and California Napa Valley wines at the forefront of the wine world.

And during the tasting tomorrow night we will be showing the movie "Bottle Shock," a film based on the famous 1976 blind tasting in Paris in which California wines came out on top, much to the chagrin of the expert -- and very French -- wine tasters.

And with the help of our good friend Kristi DeLovitch from Country Vitners we will be holding a spectacular Chateau Montelena Tomorrow Night Thursday December 10 from 5-8 pm.

This tasting will truly be Special!

There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP to David@PearsonsWine.com

CHATEAU MONTELENA NAPA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005
Winery Notes: "In the glass, our 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet shows adeep, dense, black ruby color. It offers complex aromatics of berry, cedar, licorice, and classic Cabernet which, combined with its rich, underlying fruit concentration, should please the most discriminating wine lover. In the mouth it is wonderfully smooth, full-bodied and balanced, with attractive berry and spice notes, along with rich, fine grained Cabernet tannins. Tasty today, this wine is built in the traditional Montelena style, so that it will also definitely develop nicely with a few years of cellar time."
The Wine Advocate Robert Parker 90 points: "The winery continues to turn out a strong Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards in the Calistoga area. This is a big production item (10,000 cases), and tends to be a good value for a high-class Napa Cabernet. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (22,000 cases) is a beauty. Savory black currant fruit notes intermixed with some licorice, underbrush, and spice jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, smoothly textured, beautifully elegant wine meant to be served and drunk in its first 10-12 years of life. This clearly has the fingerprints of Chateau Montelena's Bo Barrett and his father Jim Barrett, but at a much lower price point, and for that reason seems an ideal steakhouse Cabernet that gives both value and pleasure."
Reg . . . $54.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $39.99

CHATEAU MONTELENA NAPA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006
Winery Notes: "Dark rich ruby in color, this wine offers rich, complex aromas of ripe dark cherry, sweet chocolate, cinnamon, pie spice, and leather, with top notes of rose and forest floor. In the mouth this wine makes a full soft round entry, after which the acid builds nicely to make it very juicy and inviting. Loads of fine grain tannin completes the mouthfeel, with berry patch, fruit stand flavors dominating. Nice notes of clove and toasted oak round out the tremendous long finish that will keep you coming back for more. This is a very well balanced wine that will age well and pair beautifully with a wide array of foods."
International Wine Review Stephen Tanzer 88-89 points: "Full ruby-red. Less funky on the nose than the 2005, offering notes of cassis, licorice, cedar and pepper. A juicy midweight with good life in the mouth and a restrained sweetness. Bo Barrett told me that he waited a couple of extra weeks for the last cabernet to ripen, and that the acids remained high. The blend was put together later than usual and will require time to harmonize. This lacks the jammy richness of some vintages from earlier this decade, but that's not a bad thing."
Reg . . . $54.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $39.99

CHATEAU MONTELENA ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005
Winery Notes: "Dark and powerful in the glass with great density and saturation, this wine grabs your attention from the first glance. Luscious and rich on the nose with great depth, we find top notes of violets, cassis, and rich dark cherry, all riding over a base of warm leather, cocoa, wet stone and molasses. The palate opens with red raspberry and blackcurrants before building to mouth-filling ripe cherry, a beautiful acid balance, and round rich velvety tannins. The incredible intensity of the palate fades slowly leaving a finish of dried fruits and hints of clove with remarkable weight and tremendous persistence."
International Wine Review Stephen Tanzer 93 points: "Good deep ruby red. Complex aromas. Impressively structured wine. Very long, pure, and powerful on the finish."
Reg . . . $134.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE . . . $104.99

CHATEAU MONTELENA ESTATE ZINFANDAL 2006
Winery Notes: "Dark ruby in the glass, this is a very attractive and appealing wine. On the nose you'll find heaps of dark fruit, blackberry, dried blackcurrant, and strawberry undertones, complemented by rich toasted oak notes and hints of tobacco and rose. The palate opens with a clean supple entry, building to sweet briar-berry, cranberry and dried cherry with a mellow fleshy mouthfeel and suede-like tannins. Excellent structure and balanced acidity throughout carry into the warm, round, spicy finish with prolonged flavors of rich dried fruits and pie spice, inviting you back for more."
The Wine Advocate Robert Parker 87 points: "From estate vineyards, Montelena fashions an old style, classic California Zinfandel. The 2006 Zinfandel Estate is a sexy effort with crisp acidity, fresh berry fruit, plenty of pepper and spice, and no hard edges. It should be drunk over the next 2-3 years."

GLENMORANGIE SCOTCH WHISKY TASTING TUESDAY NIGHT, DEC. 8TH, 2009

Posted by Admin on Dec 08, 2009 - 07:37 PM
Glenmorangie

Since 1843, Glenmorangie distillery has been producing its famous malt here on the shores of the Dornoch Firth. Though the complex of buildings has seen many changes over the years, Glenmorangie is still handcrafted to this day by the Sixteen Men of Tain using tried and tested methods that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The earliest documented reference to distillation on this site was in 1703, in the 'Tain and Balnagown Documents', and in the 1730s a brewery was established on the site. Tain's first legal distillery was established by David Sutherland in the early 1820s on a site at the west end of the town. On the 23rd June, 1826, the Inverness Journal advertised his property for sale, describing it as 'small but commodious'. Unfortunately for Sutherland, he failed to find a buyer, and although he was re-licensed for 1827, it appears he went out of business soon after.

The Glenmorangie Distillery was licensed in 1843, and rather than buy brand new stills, the Distillery manager found second-hand swan necked stills that had been used in a gin distillery. These, he decided, would do just fine. This is why our stills have narrow, arching swan necks individually hand beaten into shape by skilled coppersmiths. They are exactly 5.14 metres tall (or for traditionalists, 16 feet 10π inches): the tallest stills in Scotland.

The year 1887 saw the final establishment of the Distillery as a limited company by the Maitland brothers, who ran the architects' practice in Tain. Their partner was Duncan Cameron, the manager of the Commercial Bank. Soon, Glenmorangie was exported all over the world; mainly to expatriate Ross-shire folk in the Colonies, but also to fine hotels and businesses in Europe and the United States. One prestigious customer was the Savoy Hotel in London!

In 1915, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were billeted at the Distillery, with the maltbarns converted into makeshift barracks for the duration of the summer. This arrangement continued each summer for the remainder of the Great War. The barns were ideal for barracks, having plenty of free floor space and, of course, the Tarlogie Springs providing an ample supply of water.

Before the Great War ended Glenmorangie had passed out of local ownership, and was bought over by its largest single customer, the Leith based company Macdonald and Muir. By the beginning of the 1920s, the rigours of wartime production had passed and the Distillery was running again with its full complement of Sixteen Men. In the 1990s additional stills were added to the still house to keep up with worldwide demand for Glenmorangie Single Malt. Then, in 2002, they introduced two more fermentation vessels (washbacks) as demand continued to increase.

Although they make more malt whisky than they used to, the Distillery continues to maintain the tradition of only employing Sixteen Men, who work around the clock, all year round, only stopping each year for Christmas and essential maintenance. By only ever employing Sixteen Men they ensure that the distillery remains one of the most traditional in the Highlands.

Glenmorangie Single Highland Malt Whisky is famous for its complexity and few whiskies can boast such a range of subtle notes and flavours.

And tomorrow night Tuesday December 8 we will be holding a great Glenmorangie Scotch Whisky Tasting from
5-8 pm. Don't miss out!
There is no charge for the tasting . . . however we must be prepared.
If you plan to attend, please RSVP to David@PearsonsWine.com

GLENMORANGIE 10 YEAR OLD ORIGINAL SINGLE MALT

The Macallan from the Speyside region of Scotland is considered by many to be the world's finest single-malt whiskey, earning monikers such as "the Rolls Royce of single malts" and "the Dom Perignon of Scotch." Throughout its long history, connoisseurs of fine scotch have held it in high esteem, and today it is one of the best known and loved single malts on the world market.

ANTICA TERRA PINOT NOIR 2007 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
The Wine Insiders 94 points: "This is a racy wine that will reward those with the patience to indulge in it over the course of an evening. Persistent fruit flavors cradle an intricate mixture of spice and oak - all carried by that luxurious silky texture that Pinot lovers are always on the look out for. This gorgeous Pinot will easily cellar for 5-7 years and provide healthy dividends to the patient soul that is able to show such restraint! "

GOLDENEYE PINOT NOIR 2006
One of the most requested wines from consumers and collectors around the world.
The Wine Enthusiast 91 points: "Very rich, very fine, this Pinot is a blend of Goldeneye's best vineyards. It shows a molten density, like liquid silver, lush in red cherries, licorice, cinnamon, coco, dried herb and orange zest flavors, and should develop in the bottle through 2012."

CLOS LA COUTALE CAHORS 2007
Wine Spectator 90 points : "Big, rich and darkly colored-these are the descriptors for the best red wines from the Cahors district of southwest France. The leading grape is Malbec (that's right, there was Malbec before Argentina) and now a small group of quality-oriented producers is pursuing a higher profile for Malbec in its homeland. Tannat and Merlot can also used in these blends. Besides an array of dark fruit flavors, the following wines from Cahors offer plenty of muscle and dense structures. They beg to be drunk with a juicy rib-eye or a roasted leg of lamb. There's a good sense of elegance to the well-defined, concentrated flavors of dark cherry, blackberry and plum, followed by notes of sage, dark chocolate and tobacco leaf on the long, powerful finish. Drink now. 5,000 cases imported"

NEYERS CHARDONNAY THIERIOT VINEYARD SONOMA COAST 2006
Neyers Vineyards sits in the heart of the Napa Valley. The barrels are made in France and air dried for three years, a year longer than normal. All of the grapes are picked by hand, into half-ton bins, then laboriously hand sorted at the winery.
These hillside Chardonnay vines are now 25 years old. The crop is invariably small, and the wine is an ideal example of mountain-grown Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast. 512 cases produced."
The Wine Advocate 93 points: "Hints of lime oil, white currant, peach, and honeysuckle, all buttressed by terrific acidity, comprise the full-bodied 2006 Chardonnay Thieriot Vineyard. A cool-climate wine with some stunning acidity and nicely integrated wood, this is a beauty that should drink nicely for another 3-4 years"

LADERA CABERNET SAUVIGNON HOWELL MOUNTAIN 2004
Wine Spectator 91 points: "A rustic yet smooth and harmonious style, with dusty berry, mineral, sage and herb scents that form a complex core of flavors. There's good intensity, and the tannins are in check. Ends with a minerally aftertaste, making this a wine that's very true to its appellation. Best from 2008 through 2016. 2,500 cases made ."

CEDERBERG BUKETTRAUBE SOUTH AFRICA 2007
At an altitude of more than 1000 m above sea level, Cederberg Cellar is South Africa's highest winery. A cool continental climate, with snow in winter and northwesterly breezes in the hot summers, combined with several different soil types, unpolluted air and crystal clear waters, make this dramatic landscape the ideal terroir for a wide range of noble wines. This particular offering is semi-sweet with 24mg/l sugar, though never cloying. Exotic and very delicate, it shows floral and fruit salad aromas, with a hint of honey, dried peaches and ripe muscat. All natural sugar with a bracing fresh finish.

WASMUND'S WHISKY FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING

Posted by Admin on Nov 19, 2009 - 05:31 PM
wasmunds single malt whisky

Friday Night, November 20, between 5 and 8 pm
Distiller Rick Wasmund will be here to sample his own Virginia Single Malt Whisky . . .

Two hours down the road in Sperryville, Virginia . . . somewhere out Rte 211 between Front Royal, Culpepper & Warrenton. . . Rick Wasmund is producing minute quantities of Single Malt Whisky . . . just like they do in in Scotland . . . with a few minor exceptions.

Made from local Thoroughbred barley from his own private grower . . . he malts it in small batches . . . in Scotland they call it "floor malting."
But when the batch is ready to dry, Rick uses no peat. Instead he uses the smoke from an apple, cherry and oak wood fire that he keeps at a slow burn . . . milled with hot water into a sweet smoky mash . . . then distilled in his double pot still.
Rick's final aging and toasting process is secret . . . patent pending, of course . . . involving highly aromatic strains of apple, cherry and oak wood.

· Wasmund's Red Top Malt Whisky . . . $34.99
· Wasmund's Malt Whisky Aging Kit . . . $94.99 (Gift of the Year)
Kit includes 2 bottles of Wasmund's Single Malt unaged Spirit Whisky or Rye Spirit Whisky and one 2 Liter Aging Barrel quantities are limited (Last year these kits sold out quickly)

WASMUND'S OWN "AGE IT YOURSELF" BARREL OF WHISKY
It's very simple . . . here's how it works.
· You buy Wasmund's CLEAR, UNAGED Virginia Single Malt or Rye Whisky and a custom made 2 liter oak barrel.
· You fill the barrel with the CLEAR, UNAGED whisky.
· You let it age for four months or so til it gets nice and smooth, bronze and creamy.
· You sip it for a while and then you age some more.
The spirit is 123 proof, which is just about the industry standard for barrel aging proof. Because of the vastly increased ration of charred oak surface area to whisky volume, these barrels work very quickly. The experiment at 4 months is great.

Veterans Day/Harold's Birthday/Terlano Tasting All Today, Weds. November 11, 2009

Posted by Admin on Nov 11, 2009 - 07:27 PM
Terlano WHAT A GREAT DAY!
IT IS VETERANS DAY, HAROLD'S BIRTHDAY, AND DON'T FORGET THE TERLANO WINE TASTING IS TONIGHT ALSO!

We have got the wines for your Thanksgiving Dinner!

On Wednesday November 11 from 5-8 pm we will be having a Cantina Terlano Wine tasting. These wines will be great for Thanksgiving Dinner and to prove it we will have Turkey and Stuffing for you to have with the wines.

The Cantina Terlano Vineyards tradition dates back more than 2000 years and is particularly renowned for its white wines, which are fruity, with big body, full complexity and longevity. Remarkable heights are reached by the gaious Pinot Blanc and the wonderfully aromatic Sauvignon Blanc, followed by the harmonious and refined Chardonnay. Each bottle is the product of the exacting standards of the winemaker, Rudi Kofler, who has a long experience in the production of authentic and traditional wines. At the heart of the Terlan wine-growing region one of the first producer cooperatives in the South Tyrol was founded in 1893. At that time 24 wine growers set themselves the goal of joint production and sales marketing. Today the Terlan cellar with approx. 100 members, a cultivable area of 150 hectares and a joint annual production of 1.2 million bottles, is one of the smaller operations in the province.
Under the expert eye of winemaker Rudi Kofler wines mature in the modern cellar, all bearing the DOC mark (official mark of origin). Their wines are sold and marketed according to three different quality categories. Special vintages in the Terlan cellar have been stored since time immemorial in the valuable "vinotheque", where they mature further under a constant watchful eye. The fact that as early on as 1893 the 0.75 liter bottle was in use, proves that right from the very start quality was of great importance in Terlan. The result is unmistakable, very strong-willed wines, which are characterised by their fruitiness and breeding, as well as by their captivating fullness and longevity. This wine collection, which is unique in the whole of Italy, proves Terlan's tradition of mature, enduring wines, which become more harmonious and elegant as they age.

TERLANER CLASSICO DOC 2008

Terlaner is a proprietary blend of Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and trace amounts of Riesling Italico grapes that have been grown on the porphyry gravel slopes of the Classico district for over 100 years.
Winery Notes: "Light yellow with olives reflections, the aromatics first entice with hints of cardamom, white pepper and soft pink grapefruit. Persistent apricot and ripe tropical citrus fruits gracefully swirl around a focused stream of intense minerality. Fresh fennel and bright acidity define the finish of this impeccably balanced wine."
Wine Spectator 90 points: "A pleasant young white, with sliced pear and apple character and clean mineral notes. Medium-bodied, balanced and fruity, with a tangy finish. Stylish. Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon. Drink now. 12,000 cases made."

PINOT GRIGIO DOC 2007

TERLANO WINE TASTING: Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Terlano

FRIDAY NIGHT (OCTOBER 9) TASTING - TRIQUET BY THE DOMAINE GRASSA FAMILY

Tariquet Winery

TARIQUET FRIDAY NIGHT

This Friday Night (October 9) Ithier Bochard from the Domaine Grassa Family in conjunction with Ronnie Miller of Robert Kacher Selections will be in our store between 4-7 pm. Come on by and check out the Tariquet Brand from the Domaine Grassa Family.

I will see you here . . .

DOMAINE DE POUY 2008

Bobby Kacher: "Once I met Yves Grassa, my life in wine has never been the same. I have never tasted such a good all purpose white wine of such high quality. Usually, when I find something very good and inexpensive, the quantities are so small, that it becomes ridiculous to import. Yves told me he hoped to produce a wine that people would want to drink everyday. Frankly, that's what happened. Oh, so fresh and vibrant. It's like crossing a bowl of fruit and a popsicle, with not too much alcohol. We ship this wine in temperature controlled containers to preserve maximum freshness. Many people drink this wine all day, everyday. You'll see why."< br>Reg $7.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $5.99 or Case Price $71

LALANDE CHARDONNAY VIN DE PAYS COTES DE GASCOGNE 2005

Bobby Kacher: "It is very possible that Yves Grassa, the proprietor of Domaine Lalande, could be considered one of France's finest white winemakers. Although this estate is located in a region known more for producing fine Armagnac brandies, Yves has been dedicated to growing "alternative" varietals and producing some of the freshest white wines to be found anywhere. Almost twenty years ago Yves planted 60 acres of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in this southwestern appellation. He used great care in selecting very good sites, and then planted the vines densely. Crop-thinning, investments in modern equipment and meticulous winemaking are behind the success of this delicious Chardonnay. All of the fruit for this wine is hand-harvested in the early morning, while the grapes are still cool and firm and then whole-cluster pressed to extract the maximum flavors and aromatics. Lalande Chardonnay is barrel made in 1/3 each new, 1-year, and 2-year oak casks. Harvest normally takes place during the first part of September, with the wines kept on the lees and stirred regularly (batonnage) until being bottled unfiltered around the first of April each year. The Lalande Chardonnay is rich in flavor, but not at all heavy. A great wine and a terrific value."
Reg $12.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $9.74 or Case Price $116

LALANDE SAUVIGNON BLANC VIN DE PAYS COTES DE GASCOGNE 2007

Bobby Kacher: "Yves Grassa is renowned for making terrific white wines in France's southwestern region of Gascony. Located about two hours south east of Bordeaux, this area is famous for producing the brandies of Armagnac, but little known for stunningly fresh whites. The Grassa approach has been considered revolutionary in this region. Their family has invested in state-of-the-art technology while maintaining a traditional sense of winemaking over five generations. Lalande's nearly forty acres of Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted in 1984. The vineyards are meticulously maintained, and yields are below 45 hecto/hectare. The fruit is hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed. Grassa uses skin-contact to extract perfume and exuberant flavors of tropical fruit. It is vinified in stainless steel. This wine has attracted an incredible following as it is simply a delicious example of Sauvignon Blanc."
Reg $11.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $8.99 or Case Price $107

DOMAINE DU TARIQUET UGNI-BLANC COLOMBARD 2006

Bobby Kacher: "All the grapes are picked in the early morning and the picking bins are lined with dry ice to keep the fruit cold and protect against oxidation. The fruit is then macerated cold between 6- 10 hours to extract flavors from the skins. All of the wines here are made completely in stainless steel tank. These extra details insure the awesome quality that we have all come to expect from the Grassa family. "Les Tours" is a cuvée made from 70% Ugni Blanc, 30% Colombard. All of the vines used in this cuvée are 50+ years old. This is a delicious, forward wine with intense orchard fruit scents and flavors."
Reg $9.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 40% OFF . . . $5.99 or Case Price $71

DOMAINE DU TARIQUET CHARDONNAY 2006

Bobby Kacher: "The Grassa family brings you this powerful, yet elegant Chardonnay, partially aged in French oak barrels. Buttery flavors, toasted bread and vanilla dominate the palate. This rich wine that remains fresh pairs beautifully with a roasted chicken."
Reg $13.59 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 25% OFF . . . $9.99 or Case Price $119

DOMAINE DU TARIQUET CHENIN- CHARDONNAY 2008

Bobby Kacher: "This wine shows the creativity and genious of Yves Grassa, as he planted both Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay on a few small vineyard blaocks at Tariquet. The majority of this wine in Chenin with its explosion of fresh flavors reminiscent of Anjou Pears and blended with about 25% Chardonnay for roundness. Impeccably balanced."
Reg $11.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 33% OFF . . . $7.99 or Case Price $95

DOMAINE DU TARIQUET SAUVIGNON 2008

Bobby Kacher: "This 100% Sauvignon Blanc displays intense floral notes, as well as great minerality. Its beautiful texture will be the perfect accompaniment to any fish or seafood dishes."
Reg $11.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 33% OFF . . . $7.99 or Case Price $95

DOMAINE DU COTE' TARIQUET CHARDONNAY-SAUVIGNON 2007

Bobby Kacher: "Cote' Tariquet means "beyond Tariquet" and is the rage in Europe's very top restaurants. This is a vineyard planted in Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and is harvested the latest at Tariquet very carefully. The production is too small to satisfy demand and the quality is truly special. The intense freshness and high notes of fruit is pure class and refinement. Yves Grassa has strived to become the best he can be and his Cote' Tariquet articulates this with fine harmony."
Reg $14.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 33% OFF . . . $9.99 or Case Price $119

DOMAINE DU TARIQUET ROSE 2008

Bobby Kacher: "Tariquet's rosé will accompany a starter or main course with ease. A beautiful shade of pomegranate red, with an exquisite, subtle and intense bouquet, this rich, full-bodied wine is fresh on the palate. Mild spicy notes lead to a delightful duo of wild raspberry and flower petals. The fruit is a treat as the wine's intensity retains an ethereal quality, leaving a trace of rich flavors and salty spiciness on the finish. This is a rosé made from red grapes, using the same vinification process as for white wine. Serve it chilled, before or during a meal. It is excellent with tapas, summer dishes, Italian food, or spicy, exotic cuisine."
Reg $10.99 . . . PEARSON'S SALE PRICE 37% OFF . . . $6.99 or Case Price $83
