SHAFER VINEYARDS/ RUTHERFORD RANCH TUESDAY NIGHT WINE TASTING
SHAFER VINEYARDS
Shafer Vineyards traces its beginnings to 1972 when John Shafer left a 23-year career in the publishing industry and, with his family, moved to the Napa Valley to pursue a second career in wine. After purchasing a 210-acre estate in Napa Valley's Stags Leap District, the Shafer family faced the arduous task of replanting the existing vineyards, which dated to the 1920s, and terracing the steep and rocky hillsides, eventually expanding vineyard acreage to its current 50 acres.
Evolving from grape growers to vintners, the Shafers crushed their first Cabernet grapes in 1978 and began construction on their winery a year later.
The first Shafer Cabernet became a benchmark, winning the acclaimed San Francisco Vintners Club taste-off upon release and, over a decade later taking first place in an international blind tasting held in Germany, where it outranked such wines as Chateau Margaux, Chateau Latour and Chateau Palmer.
Doug Shafer became winemaker in 1983 after graduating from the University of California at Davis with a degree in enology and viticulture. A year later Elias Fernandez joined the winery as assistant winemaker. Together Doug and Elias have worked closely to forge the Shafer style of quality, consistency and elegance.
SHAFER ONE POINT FIVE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 91+ points : "Bright, medium ruby-red. Expressive, rather wild nose melds cassis, black cherry, tobacco, iron, mocha, leather and brown spices. A bit less plump than the 2005 version, but suave and vinous, with good cut and life to the varietally typical flavors of currant, leather, mocha and tobacco leaf. This slightly restrained, soil-driven wine still needs time to unwind and will merit a higher score if time brings more pliancy. Finishes with firm, building tannins and sneaky length."
Wine Enthusiast 90 points : "Sourced primarily from two Stags Leap Districts - the famed Hillside estate and the Borderline vineyard - this generation-and-a-half idea is a great selection for Shafer lovers who might not be able to indulge in the Hillside Select (or can't get their hands on a bottle). Sweet blackberry, plum and current fruit aromas and flavors are complemented by nuances of savory herbs, cocoa and cigar box (complete with cigars!)."
Winery Notes: "Aromas of pure, elegant
black fruit, dark chocolate,
and spice, followed by rich, juicy flavors of blackberry
and black cherry, chocolate, and cedar, with ripe,
smooth tannins and a long finish."

SHAFER MERLOT 2006
Wine Enthusiast 95 points : "Easily Shafers greatest Merlot ever. Certainly its richest, with fabulously concentrated blackberry, cherry, licorice, chocolate and cinnamon spice flavors. All this is wrapped into extraordinarily sweet, refined tannins. Addictively drinkable, but not a long ager. Best now and through 2012."
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine
Cellar 90 points : "Very good deep ruby-red color.
Medicinal black
cherry, licorice and flowers on the slightly high-toned
nose, along with a suggestion of cherry skin. Dense,
sweet and fruity in the mouth if still a bit youthfully tight,
with a slight medicinal quality to the flavors of dark
berries, black cherry and licorice. Finishes smooth
and long, with firm tannins. I'd give this a year before
pulling the cork."

WE WILL ALSO HAVE THIS GREAT SHAFER WINE ON SALE BUT UNFORTUNATELY WE WILL NOT HAVE THIS WINE AVAILABLE FOR TASTING:
SHAFER RELENTLESS 2006
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 92-94 points : "The 2006 Relentless may be even better. It possesses an opaque purple hue as well as a grapy, smoky perfume displaying scents of roasted meats, blackberries, licorice, and charcoal. This packed and stacked, full-bodied 2006 should drink beautifully for 10-15 years."
Wine Spectator 90 points : 'Dense, rich
and
chewy, with tightly wound mineral, graphite, plum and
berry flavors that are full-blown and concentrated. This
gains depth and nuance on the finish, while retaining
its structure and focus. Syrah and Petite Sirah. Drink
now through 2016."

RUTHERFORD RANCH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2008
Winery Notes: "The 2008 harvest followed
a
season - harsh frosts, unusually high temperatures
and a record early start. The quality of the fruit is
outstanding - producing elegant, well-structured and
concentrated wines.
This Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and refreshing. It has
delicious stone fruit characteristics and explosive
tropical aromas and flavors which distinctively reflect
our Napa Valley fruit. We source grapes from warmer
areas of the Valley for the grassier characteristics and
blend with those from cooler sites, which give us
bright tropical notes and flavors."

RUTHERFORD RANCH CHARDONNAY 2008
Winery Notes: "The 2008 harvest followed
a
tumultuous growing season - harsh frosts, unusually
high temperatures and a record early start. This
actually resulted in exceptional wines across the
Napa Valley including this Chardonnay.
This characteristic Chardonnay starts off with
aromas
of freshly picked apricots and sweet honey. The fruit
theme continues with scents of crisp green apples
and just peeled lemon zest followed by hints of vanilla
and crème brûlée. Full bodied, with beautiful balance,
this Napa Valley Chardonnay with flavors of ripe
peach, pear, vanilla and crisp Meyer lemon are
perfectly balanced leaving your palate with a clean,
crisp finish."
