Tasting: FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING: BODEGAS NEKEAS/ VEGA SINDOA WINEMAKER CONCHA VECINO AT PEARSON'S AND 2005 BORDEAUX WINE TASTING

Vineyard Spanish BODEGAS NEKEAS/ VEGA SINDOA WINES

Nekeas is one of the northern most vineyards on the peninsula. Cultivation of the grapes is only possible thanks to the presence of the Sierra Perdon, which provides a mountainous barrier protecting the Nekeas Valley from the cold winds of the Pyrenees.

The valley is also caressed by the moderating influences of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean, whose essence flows up the Ebro Valley. This climate would be difficult to find elsewhere on the Iberian peninsula.

These factors results in a number of microclimes in the valley, each favoring a particular variety of grapes, such as a Grenache, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, all used to produce the excellent red wines and Viura, Chardonnay, and Muscatel, used for the succulent white wines.

Robert Parker has said of the vineyard "Bodegas Nekeas has emerged as one of the World's Best Value Wineries, and it is hard to believe the prices of some of their wines."

The cordiality of the people is deeply-rooted in the Nekeas valley. They are content to let the rich wines they produce speak for them.

VEGA SINDOA CHARDONNAY 2007

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 89 points: "Yellow-gold. Exotic, highly expressive bouquet of spicy melon, white peach, lees, marzipan and jasmine. Silky orchard and pit fruit flavors are given spine by zesty acidity and pick up a brown butter note with air. Impressively complex chardonnay with good finishing breadth and sweet persistence. You could spend three times this much on a white Burgundy and get less wine."

VEGA SINDOA EL CHAPARRAL 2008

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 88 points: "100% Garnacha. 70 Year Old Vines. Inky ruby. Exotically perfumed bouquet displays black raspberry, cherry compote, licorice and dark chocolate, plus a sexy floral overtone. Fresh, focused red and dark berry flavors are given depth by a note of bitter chocolate and framed by silky tannins. Finishes with very good clarity and mineral snap, with the black raspberry note repeating. Year in and out this is a superb value."

BODEGAS NEKEAS VEGA SINDOA TEMPRANILLO 2008

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 88 points: "Dark ruby. Redcurrant, cherry, dried flowers and a note of pepper on the nose. Suave, supple and sweet, with a core of peppery spices giving energy and cut to the sweet red fruit flavors. No obvious tannins to get in the way of the juicy fruit, which lingers nicely on the velvety finish."

2005 BORDEAUX WINE TASTING

The 2005 Bordeaux Vintage wine has received such high reviews that demand for the wine continues to rise rapidly. We were fortunately able to get a few cases of some great wines and are able to get them to you at a great price that you will find are one of the best prices anywhere.

Acclaimed wine critic, Robert Parker has described the 2005 Bordeaux vintage as being "the greatest vintage produced during my 30 year career" and this is his assessment of the Vintage along with the different regions of Bordeaux.

"Historically, the finest Bordeaux vintages (including 2000, 1990, 1982, 1961, 1959, 1949, 1947 and 1945) have resulted from dry, hot weather in the summer and fall. And while Bordeaux experienced relatively severe, even drought like conditions in 2005, there were no periods of torrid heat, even in July, August and September. Other notable facts about the 2005 wines: They have some of the highest tannin levels in modern-day red Bordeaux, extremely high levels of dry extract (in other words, these are seriously concentrated wines), high alcohol levels (even higher than 2003-a vintage of record alcohol levels) and moderate acid levels (which give the best wines a fresh, lively, almost tangy character). Overall, the 2005 Bordeaux have turned out brilliantly, and 2005 does appear to be one of the most singular years of the past five decades.

Standouts of the 2005 vintage include the Graves region on the Left Bank and the Right Bank appellations of Pomerol and St-Émilion. In all three of these areas, the wines are concentrated, massive and high in tannin. However, because there is very little Cabernet Sauvignon in most of the blends (Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the favored grapes, especially in Pomerol and St-Émilion), the tannins are sweeter and the wines more approachable. In fact, many of the wines will offer compelling drinking in six to eight years, although they will continue to evolve for three decades or more. Another advantage these wines possess is that the lower-level St-Émilion and Graves offerings will not be nearly as expensive as the more famous and aristocratic names of the northern Médoc.

The 2005 wines were especially tannic in the northern Médoc communes of St-Julien, Pauillac and St- Estèphe. But, unlike the best wines of 1982, 1989 and 1990, most of the 2005s will not be approachable for 10 to 15 years-at minimum. However, past experience suggests they will require many years of cellaring-30 to 50 years, in fact. The good news is that even these tannic monsters are fresh, concentrated and well balanced.

CHATEAU LAROQUE SAINT-EMILION 2005

Wine Spectator 91 points : "Black in color. Gorgeous aromas of crushed blackberry, violet and dark chocolate lead to a full- bodied palate, with powerful, chewy tannins and loads of beautiful fresh fruit. Very extracted, but this should mellow with time. Best after 2015. 9,330 cases made."

Wine Enthusiast 91 points: "Big, rich and elegant, this wine has fine, lifted black fruits layered over dry new wood and fruit tannins. It is certainly firm, and needs at least 45 years aging, but it will develop into a sophisticated, balanced wine."

CHATEAU DE PEZ SAINT-ESTEPHE 2005

Created in the 15th century, Pez is the oldest domaine in Saint Estèphe. The Pontac family, who also created Haut-Brion, gave Pez its vineyards. The domaine was sold as a property of the state after the French Revolution and owned by a succession of families before it was purchased by Champagne Louis Roederer in 1995.

Located west of the town of Saint-Estèphe, Château de Pez consists of 74 continuous acres, with 59 acres planted to prime grape varieties, mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine from St-Estèphe typically matures more slowly than its southern counterparts. The soil is heavy and rich with clay, leading to wines with firm tannins and high acidity.

Wine Spectator 88 points: "Lots of smoky wood, with currant and spice that follow through to a medium-to-full body, with medium tannins and a crisp finish. Best after 2009. 12,500 cases made."

Winery Notes: "The 2005 vintage is dense in color, retaining a purplish-blue hint typical of wines that are slow to develop. The slightly toasty nose has plenty of red- and black- berry fruit and a hint of jamminess mingled with aromas of spice and tobacco. The nose is reminiscent of the 2004 vintage and is what you would expect of a wine made from very ripe grapes. It is already deliciously complex. The palate is entirely consistent with the nose. The attack is still firm at this stage but developing in a manner that instantly suggests an opulent wine. Good, well-rounded substance lingers elegantly on the palate, with silky tannins and not a trace of harshness. This is truly an exceptional wine: thoroughbred, elegant and rich."

CHATEAU VIEUX LAPEYRE SAINT-EMILION 2005
Winery Notes: "Winemaking in Bordeaux and the temperature control allows optimum extraction. The pumping is performed several times a day until, taste, we judge that the potential has been extracted. A vat of twenty days will always monitored by sampling taste. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked and sang in oak barrels. Livestock itself will start and last between 18 and 24 months. A taste will be constant monitoring for any breeding. The goal is not to make a decoction of oak. Oxygen passes through the wood which enhances the wine's tannins, from ennobling the wine, making them more flexible, more harmonious. Depending on the choice of hot barrels during manufacture, the aromas of fruit, vanilla and toast will be highlighted.

This wine has deep color flickering reflections of garnet. The bouquet, intense and complex, consists of a set of red fruit flavors and tobacco, wood and discreet prune confit. The structure, ample and generous, is supported by velvety tannins. A very good persistence is accompanied by a return fruity and smoky. His balance and personality are a real wine storage which can promise a bright future in a good cellar."

CHATEAU COTE MONTPEZAT COTES DE CASTILLON 2005

Wine Advocate 89 points: "Another sleeper of the vintage, this deep ruby/purple-colored wine possesses sweet floral, cranberry and blackberry notes along with a hint of cold steel. Medium-bodied, ripe, and forward, with loads of fruit, glycerin, and soft tannin, it should be consumed during its first 7-8 years of life."

Winery Notes: "Ideal with red meats, game, dishes with sauce such as lamprey, stew, and certain cheeses. Elaborated with a double ambition, it will be very pleasant to drink young but its soil of origin however will allows you to keep it, 10-15 more years."
