CLINE CELLARS
The current trend for all things Rhône-like was not what started Fred Cline down the Rhône varietal path more than twenty years ago. Fred's leap of faith from the traditional, well-trodden Cabernet route stemmed from his belief in the "magnificent old vines that were in my own backyard". While it has not been without struggle, Fred's vision has certainly paid off, and as a result, Cline Cellars now bears the reputation for producing some of the finest Rhône-style wines and Zinfandels in California.
In the latter part of the 1800s, Oakley, Contra Costa County was a booming farming community with thousands of acres of orchards and healthy vineyards. Fred Cline's maternal grandfather, Valeriano Jacuzzi of pump and spa fame, called this place home. On summer visits to his grandparents, Fred learned both the love of agricultural life and the mysteries of vinifying grapes into wine. These lessons led Fred to obtain a degree in Agriculture Management from U.C. Davis. In 1982, with an inheritance from his grandfather, Fred founded Cline Cellars near Oakley, California. Here, he preserved and restored many ancient vine sites to their rightful reign as premier California wine lands.
In 1991, Fred and his wife Nancy relocated the winery from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County on a historic 350-acre estate with new vineyards and facilities. While much of the cool Carneros region is planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot, Fred pioneered the planting of Rhône varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Their holdings include some of the oldest and rarest vines in California. They are best known for the one hundred year old plantings of Carignane, Mourvedre and Zinfandel grapes they farm in Oakley, California.
Fred's innovation and experimentation led to producing rich, distinctive Rhône-style wines and intense, flavorful Zinfandels for which he has garnered enormous acclaim. In 2007, our 2004 Sonoma Zinfandel was rated 91 pts by the Wine Spectator, the 2004 Bridgehead Zinfandel was rated 90 pts, and the 2004 Ancient Vines Mourvèdre was named, "One of the top 100 values of the Year" by Wine & Spirits.
CLINE CARIGNANE ANCIENT
VINES 2007
A tale of two Carignanes. Carignane
(pronounced
karen-yawn) is one of the most widely planted grapes
in the world, found in abundance in Spain, France and
California. Most Carignane is grown in a prolific
manner and used as a blending grape for its color
and structure. By contrast, our Carignane, from our
ancient vineyards that yield a mere two tons per acre,
is a wine with firm structure and rich, dark fruit that will
age gracefully.
Winery Notes: "Carignane holds the
distinction of being one of the
most widely planted red grapes in France. It is also
grown abundantly in Italy, Spain, Algeria and Israel
and was once the most planted varietal in the new
world. It has traditionally been used as a blending
grape because of its favorable yields, excellent acidity
and big tannins. Cline Cellars is one of a few wineries
to vinify this varietal. Dark ruby in color, the 2006
Ancient Vines Carignane offers aromas of plum,
chocolate and clove. The old vine elicits a taste of
typical Oakley terroir, a dusty, dark cherry fruit and a
nice bright acidity.
It's a perfect match for grilled meats, braised
short
ribs, even pizza with goat cheese."

CLINE MOURVEDRE ANCIENT VINES
2007
Winery Notes: "Just remember "Move
Over Dear." Our Ancient Vines
Mourvèdre offers distinct chocolate characteristics and
a luscious deep plum flavor. Tannins are soft with a
substantial mouth-feel. Ancient Vines Mourvèdre is a
scrumptious and unusually delightful wine.
We recommend trying this wine with anything grilled."
Wine Spectator 88 points: "Big and
intense, with minty
bay leaf scents joining ripe, rich blackberry and wild
berry flavors that are framed by gritty, minerally tannins
and a dash of pepper. Drink now through 2012."

CLINE CASHMERE 2008
Cashmere is one of the most precious gifts of
nature.
It evokes quality, luxuriousness, and something that is
a labor of love to produce. Cashmere is a silky
and wonderful blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, and
Syrah. Just as with the processing of cashmere, the
production of these meticulously farmed grapes and
the blending of the components that result in this wine
is something achieved only with extraordinary time
and skill. Enjoy with foods and friends of distinction.
Cline Cellars is a proud sponsor of Breast
Cancer
Network of Strength's Ride to Empower.
Winery Notes : "We initially created this
blend as an auction lot for the
Hospice du Rhone held in Paso Robles each year.
Cashmere is a very flavorful, smooth wine offering big
cherry, raspberry and chocolate notes with hints of
cracked black pepper and plum."

CLINE ZINFANDEL ANCIENT
VINES 2008
Winery Notes: "The Ancient Vines
Zinfandel shows wonderful dusty
raspberry, blackberry, white pepper and spice, with
coffee and chocolate characters. Aging in new and
used wood has lent this wine a subtle vanilla quality
that nicely complements the explosive fruit notes.
Ripe fruit and soft tannins, make this mouth-coating
rich vintage a nice complement to pasta dishes with a
light tomato sauce or grilled meats. Enjoy now or
cellar for 5 to 7 years."

CLINE VIOGNIER 2007
This varietal comes from the Northern Rhône
Valley in
France. Presumed to have arrived from Dalmatia and
transported to the Rhone 1,700 years ago by Romans.
There are only 2,000 acres of this variety in California
at this time. Viognier is known for its perfumed
aromas and ripe fruit flavors.
Winery Notes: "Cline Viognier shows big
pineapple, peach and
apricot flavors mixed with citrus and floral notes. This
full-bodied flavorful wine is an excellent match for
Mediterranean stews, Thai curry and spicy Mexican
dishes."

CLINE ZINFANDEL 2008 CALIFORNIA
Meticulous farming. Mature fruit. Handmade
wines.
Severe selection. Master blending. From repeated
tasting of the fruit in the vineyard to seeing the grapes
come through the hopper, thhey still do it the old-
fashioned way. Cline thinks it shows in the bottle, the
only
thing that matters.
Winery Notes: "As always the California
Zinfandel is a challenging
and rewarding wine to produce. Severe selection
criteria and master blending show in the final product,
which showcases a wide array of dark berry fruit
including black cherry and raspberry. Firm, supple
tannins add complexity to this wine. Additionally,
spice notes and a lasting finish of vanilla from oak
aging and firm, supple tannins add complexity to this
wine. This wine is ready to drink now and will continue
to develop complexity over the next three to four years."

CLINR SYRAH SONOMA COUNTY 2007
A Syrah is a Syrah is a Syrah and also a Shiraz
but not
a Sirah (Petite type)! Syrah originated in the Rhône
Valley in France and is now widely planted in other
regions of France, Italy, Australia (known there as
Shiraz) and California.
Winery Notes: "Syrah is a fantastic grape
to work with in the cellar.
The deep red-purple color explodes and fascinates
each time it is poured into a glass. Its origins stem
from the Rhône Valley. Cline's Syrah is a wine of
surprising complexity. The deep purple color explodes
with fresh blueberry and black cherry jammy fruit
spiced with cracked black pepper aromas. The
pepper aromas complement the black cherry
fruitiness of this vintage."
